Quickest way to get the passport

Hi all:

I am expecting my citizenship certificate anytime now. My question is, what is the fastest way to get my passport? I would like to travel in December, but haven't booked anything due to not having a passport.
The town I live in does not have a passport processing facility; I would have to drive to Edmonton, and also have a trip coming to a city in a different province where I could apply.

I hear applying through mail can take a nightmare amount of time. Can I apply at any city? or does it have to be in my province? How long does it typically take if applied in person? Do I need to book an appointment?

You can apply in person at any Service Canada or Passport Office.
