Quick question

Hello. I would like to join the Royal Canadian Air Force but for that I need a Canadian citizenship I think. I am from Slovakia but I live in Ireland, is there no way of joining without a citizenship/getting one without spending three years there? I'm currently 17 years old and I have a year left of high school.

Unless you were born to a Canadian citizen parent - there is no way for you to get Canadian citizenship quickly and without living in Canada for several years.

Before you can even think about citizenship, you will first have to qualify and apply for permanent residency in Canada. Information on how to apply for PR is available here:

Once you have PR, you will have to live in Canada for 4 years to qualify to apply for citizenship (the citizenship rules are changing this year and you will now have to live in Canada for 4 out of 6 years to qualify for citizenship).

If not, I question why you want to join the Canadian forces in the first place. This might seem like a terrorist tactic to most people...

Ah I see, I guess it's a no go then.
And no, I'm not a terrorist..... Why I'd like to join? Well I like aircraft (except commercial planes), and there is no Air Force in Ireland and Slovakian Air Force is a bad joke. So yes, Canada sounded like a good idea. Being born in a poor country is such a rip off haha.

In the "old days", it was quite common for people (mainly men) to join the armed forces of foreign nations. For example, a number of Americans joined the Canadian or British armies before the U.S. joined World War II. And, a number of Canadians joined the U.S. army to fight in Vietnam. Then, of course, there's the French Foreign Legion, which was mainly composed of non-French citizens.

I dont think that even Canadian permanent residents can apply and get into armed forces here.

They require Canadian citizenship.

Dont know why the Bill C24 says PRs who are serving armed forces have shorter path to citizenship when you are not even eligible to apply.

Does anybody has the answer?

I am a chef based out of Brandon, Manitoba.... (I am a forces chef)

Citizens of other countries, which permanent residents essentially are since they have not yet recieved Canadian citizenship, may join the CF under specific circumstances.

As stated on the CF recruiting website (its amazing what a simple Google search will uncover) "Citizens of another country who have landed immigrant (Permanent Resident) status in Canada may also be considered for enrolment when the CF has need of their skill, when the position cannot be filled by a Canadian citizen, and if the national interest would not be prejudiced.

You will notice that Bill C-24 allows for expedited processing times for Permanent Residents of Canada who have applied for Citizenship...

Seriously, what would be the need for this clause in the bill if they did not allow PR's to enroll in the forces? It's kinda self explanatory...

On paper everything seems so easy to be achieved in Canada, but then comes the reality and the majority have to remove the rosy glasses .
