Hi All,

I am an Indian and have been in Canada for the last 3.5 years; I am now eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship. Because of my job, I have to move to the USA. I have some questions and looking for input so I can make some informed decisions.

Questions:
1) Can I apply for citizenship and move to the United States on an H1B work visa? (also planning to renew my Canada PR card based on the processing timelines)
2) If everything goes well and I get the test date and oath ceremony, can I stay in Canada temporarily to complete the formalities before returning to the United States?
3) How do I renounce my Indian citizenship and apply for a Canadian passport?
I believe I should remain in Canada until I receive my Canadian passport.
5) Is there any way to expedite my Canadian passport application so that I can return to work? The employer will allow a maximum of two months of remote work.
6) Do I need to transfer/modify the USA H1B work visa associated with my Indian passport after obtaining a Canadian passport?
7) In June 2023, my wife and children will have completed their 1095 days of eligibility. Can I apply for Canadian citizenship online for myself and then do a paper application for my wife and children?

YES, apply and then leave.

Yes, you need to be physically in CA to take the oath. Don’t leave without your citizenship certificate.

3) How do I renounce my Indian citizenship and apply for a Canadian passport?
I believe I should remain in Canada until I receive my Canadian passport.
Not necessary, you need to stay till you get the citizenship certificate , use your Indian passports up to 3 months without penalty to travel back to US through land border.

5) Is there any way to expedite my Canadian passport application so that I can return to work? The employer will allow a maximum of two months of remote work.
you can apply for passport from the USA, make sure you take the certificate once you take oath.

6) Do I need to transfer/modify the USA H1B work visa associated with my Indian passport after obtaining a Canadian passport?
Yes, ask your immigration attorney, it is simpler for Canadian citizens.

I can’t see the Canadian Government expediting your application for the sole reason so you can now go & live & work and pay taxes to a foreign country .
