Which visa office are you using? ND?

Renew your PP as quickly as possible. Apply for extension shortly before your status expires. (If you apply online, you can do it the day before and be okay - by mail you need to do it sooner.)

I haven't heard of the strike actually effecting any PRs yet. (The officers on strike are NOT immigration officers.) It sounds more like you need a new passport because it's required your COPR be valid for at least 3 months after issuing. Your passport would need to be valid for at least 90 days after issuing COPR too. Sounds like CIC isn't sure you will have enough time with your current PP.

Thank you, amikety for the quick reply! Yes, I am a Aug 2012 PR applicant from ND.

I wasn't sure about CIC strike NOT affecting PR files. Thanks, Yes, we thought and got the same reply about CIC not having enough time left on my current pp.

Question: my visitor's extension is expiring in Aug. Do you think, still I can file online extension? Or do I have to go to home country and do all the paper work again? (Including new TRV visa, police clearance, medica ?) Oh God, that thought itself is giving me a jerk :-( My visitor's extension is expiring in Aug as I mentioned before, can I still get a pp renew from here, Toronto?

I don't know the exact requirements for someone from India to get a new visitor's visa unfortunately. However, I do know it's illegal to mail your passport outside India, so in order to renew it, you may have to return. If I were you, I would check with the NDVO thread or the nearest Indian consulate/embassy to see if they can help you renew your PP without having to leave.

If they're asking you to get a new PP, they should be getting close to issuing the visa. So the good news, if you do need to return to India, it shouldn't take too long to get your PR. Once you have your PR, you don't need to worry about getting permission to enter Canada anymore.

Thank you for the suggestion! It really helps to foresee things!

Most probably I will be flying by next month. Same time, I have few questions:

By any chance do you know what happens if I ask NDVO to return my passport? does this mean I am withdrawing my application by withdrawing pp? Or once I renew my pp can I resubmit my pp with the current application in continuation?

Another question: Is there a requirement by CIC to have at least 6 months time validity left at the time of PR stamping? I had send my application when I had 14 months on pp and now four months are left. If you could provide any cic guideline or online link that supports this thought that we need at least 6 months of passport time left on the pp, it would be wonderful.

Thanks,

I've of people requesting it back for travel and asking NDVO to ask again when they are ready to issue the visa. Once again, it's probably best to check some of the NDVO threads as a user there may have first hand experience whereas mine is second hand.

There is a requirement for 3 months left. I don't know where in the operating manual it is, but COPRs must be valid for at least 3 months (90 days) after issuance. There has to be a reasonable amount of time for an applicant to make arrange to move (I. e., sell house, pack, arrange shipping of items, etc - there's a lot to do). CIC feels 90 days is adequate. However, you can't use an expired passport.

It sounds to me like your IO is being proactive. Instead of waiting and seeing, he's asking for the new PP now to ensure there aren't further delays in your processing. I've heard of people getting to the ever end, only to find out they have to renew their PP, which can takes months and/or involve travel. That ultimately delays your visa. It's probably a good thing your case officer is requesting it now.

Hi Amikety,

I like how you gave very helpful answers. Are you still active in this forum?
I have similar situation here. I am now in Canada as a visitor to visit my girlfriend.

But I am not American, I am Indonesian, which is not a visa exempt country.
Do you think in my case it would work to just extend my visitor visa like your case?
At the moment I actually trying to get a Study Permit.

Thanks in advance

Hi Amikety,

I hope you can give me a quick piece of advice regarding my moving to canada on a visitor visa with the intention of gaining common-law with my girlfriend.

I returned to the UK last October after working in canada on a working holiday visa. My visa expired in August and I managed to change it to a visitor visa in order to remain there until October. I started my relationship with my canadian girlfriend last July 2013, and when I moved back, my intention was to return as a student. Since then I realized how expensive it is, so we decided I should come back and live together for 12 months and apply for common-law.

As a British national, I can stay as a tourist for upto 6 months, however is there a chance I could be turned away on arrival? I have $6700 in my account, and I will have a return flight booked. Should I book a flight back to the UK for 5 months after I arrive, and say that I'm visiting my girlfriend, and show that I have money to support myself?

I also would like your advice on us both getting our names on a tenancy agreement. Since we will need this to get common law, will they say you aren't allowed to be on a tenancy agreement if you aren't a canadian resident?

Many thanks for your help.
