Hi there!

My spouse and I submitted out application and it was received at the beginning of July. It has not started the processing yet. The tracking number said it was received, but CIC does not recognize any of our ID numbers, so I don't believe it's started any stage yet.

When my spouse and I applied, we applied outland as both of us were living in New Zealand at the time. I am Canadian, and recently left New Zealand alone to come back to Canada to fulfill some wedding bookings I had this Summer. My spouse stayed in Canada to deal with some lose ends after his father's tragic passing.

My question is, can my spouse join me in Canada? And for how long? After that period of time, will he need to leave Canada and wait for the PR if it hasn't come by that time? My family is planning a trip to Hawaii, and we'd all like to go together. If my spouse comes to Canada for a few weeks, can he then come to Hawaii with us and return to Canada afterwards? Or will this entering/leaving effect our application or his visitor's status?

Thank you all in advance! You've all been so helpful :)

Sorry! It should be mentioned that we are common-law spouses.

If your spouse is visa exempt to Canada, he can come visit same as anybody else. Unless he is told something different when he enters, he can stay for up to 6 months. After 5 months, if he wants to stay longer, he can apply to extend. He should make sure he has travel insurance in case of an emergency and like any other visitor, he should have a return ticket although you can buy one that is open or refundable in case you want to change it or do not use it.

If he is not visa exempt to Canada, he would need a visit visa in order to visit and sometimes it is hard for spouses of Canadians to get approved because they might believe he is not planning on leaving again.

If he gets called for an interview, he needs to go back to New Zealand to attend. Otherwise, he'd just mail his passport there when they ask for it and they would mail it back with his visa in it.

Going to Hawaii would not affect his visitor status in Canada.

new zealand is a visa exempt country so your spouse is free to visit canada anytime.
about the passport request. i have read in this forum that for the applicants from visa exempt country can just send the passport photocopies and can get copr. ( i can be wrong) but this is what i read in this forum from someone saying that they got a letter stating this. I know about US but even NZ is visa exempt so it should have the same procedure
