I was told that my application are in process and they would email me when they are going to do the background check. But what I want to know is how long does it take to do a background check ? I got this message in November.

The background check could take as little as one month, it varies for different countries. Also, you may not receive an email to indicate that the checks have started however you will see the status change on your online account so keep checking.
I'm Jamaican as well.
My background check started Nov 2nd and my passport request was around Nov 28th. As long as you haven't lived in another country the process should not take long.
