I moved from the US to Canada today after living in the US for quite some time. I am a Canadian Citizen (and US Citizen) and I am in process of having 3 cars shipped from one side of the US to the other side, where I intend to pick them up with help from family members and drive them across the border. I started the export process by getting an AES filing for all vehicles.

A 4th car I didn't ship, but drove it across the border today with the intent of exporting/importing it with the 3 above cars, so all 4 cars TOGETHER. I was going to drive it back down in a week or so, and export and then import all 4 at once.

Today when I crossed the border and told the CBSA officer that I was moving home, he made me import the car that I was driving, even though I had NOT completed the export process in the US. I told him I didn't want to import it but wanted to claim it as goods to follow and planned on importing it shortly at the same time that I would import the other 3 cars. He insisted that I was to do it on the spot. I have heard that if I ever drive the car into the US, I could be in a lot of trouble. And I do plan to drive the car into the US in the future.

Does anyone have any advice of what to do in my situation? Should I call CBP and ask them for advice?
