Hi, Could someone please tell me if I can continue my teleworking job when I arrive in Canada? I am waiting for my permanent residency, but I don't think I will get this before my arrival.
Any advice on taxation in this situation would be gratefully received also.
Thanks.

If all payments come from OUTSIDE of Canada, and you are not actually doing any work for Canadians, then you don't need a work visa.

As far as I know if you are just in Canada under visitor status with no work permit, and are teleworking for a foreign company, then there is no need to file Canadian taxes or report the income at all to the CRA. With no SIN you can't file Canadian taxes anyways.

In my own job, I occasionally travel to other countries and while there continue to work for my company via telecommuting or teleconferencing. At no point have I ever needed to report income in the country I happened to be in, since I was just there as a visitor only.

Thank you that helps.
Am I right in assuming that I should continue to pay tax in the UK while I am working under visitor status in Canada?

100% definitely yes. If you are in Canada just as a visitor, but are getting paid by a company in the UK for teleworking... then you better be paying all applicable UK taxes!

In my own case my trips were fairly short. If someone was a "visitor" in Canada for say over 1 year, i'm not sure how that would affect the tax issue. You need to check the residency laws in the UK and how it relates to taxes. In this case there may also be a need to report income to CRA, but I have no idea how this is done with no SIN or work permit for the person filing.

ok thanks. I think there is a set number of days you are considered resident in the UK in any tax year. I will find out. Thank you.
