I have a question regarding qualifications and work experience. My situation is extremely complicated so I'll just summarize it.

- I went to the US when I was 12 years old. I'm 24 years old now.
- I completed one year of middle school(8th grade) and 4 years of high school(9th to 12th) in New York.
- I was pursuing a associates degree in Computer Science at Queensborough Community College in New York
- My student visa got expired because of failure to maintain enough credits per semester. The reason was because I was also working a 9 to 5 job and could only take evening classes.
- I returned back to India August of last year.
- I do not currently have a degree in any field. Only 3 years of work in Computer Science. No degree or diploma.
- I want to switch my career track from Computer Science to Culinary(Chef/Cooking).
- I have been working at a hotel since June of this year.
- I applied to Humber Institute of Canada for a 1 year Culinary Skills Certificate Program and was accepted.
- I wasnt required to take IELTS or any other examinations since I was part of the American Educational system for 7 years.
- I have an offer letter from the Hotel I'm currently working stating that I've been working with them as a trainee and that I have paid full-time employment upon my return back to India and completion of the certificate program.

My question is that is this enough proof to show that I have work experience and qualifications in the field that I'm working?

Thanks for the help.

Hey Ak3019

Recently Canadian High commission in delhi and chandigarh has been scrutinizing the applications and refusing a lot many students stating their previous qualifications/Work experience does not match with their proposed education.

Since your experience in hospitality ain't much and what you have done earlier has got no relation to hospitaity industry whatsoever so it becomes all the more difficult to convince the Visa officer as to why have you chosen this profession and also of your genuine intentions to study.

Many people will suggest you to submit a SOP (statement of purpose) to explain/justify your change of profession/line along with your study permit application which I feel is never required(embassy doesnt ask for it) hence it does not make much difference to you application(So submitting that wouldn't diminish the risk involved)

My Suggestion- if you don't want to push your luck but rather want to make it through succesfully then you must pursue education related to your previous work experience (there are plenty of courses related to computer science to choose from). Rest use your discretion buddy.

Wish you all the best

Thanks for the advice.

I do not get how they want applicants to apply for courses that corresponds to their previous qualifications. What if someone is in my position who wants to switch careers, which millions of people do all over the world, how can they go about getting an education? This entire policy is kinda ridiculous. I guess that's a question for the Canadian Consulate.

Thanks again for the advice. Don't really know what to do as I do not want to continue my career in IT under any circumstance. Let's see what happens.

Hey Ak3019

Buddy there is no denying to what you have mentioned above . unfortunately,as I mentioned earlier they are very particular about course selection thing and discourage switching careers.

Incase if you have made up your mind to go for Hospitality course, you know you could always give it a try but better get some more experience maybe that could help.

All the best
