Question regarding Name(First/Last/Given/Family)

Hello Everyone,

I have a question regarding Individual name.
My Full name is Sharanjeet Kaur.
When I came here in Canada, I came to know that in passport, it is reflected as Last name only like (Firstname, Lastname) - , Sharanjeet Kaur. I don't use Family name
While applying for citizenship, it is advised to change the name like First name Middle name Last name like Sharanjeet Kaur Saini
I don't want to use my Family name(Saini). Can I use the name as Sharan (Firstname) jeet(Middle name) Kaur(Last name and Family name)
Kindly advise do i need to change name while applying for citizenship as it is reflected as Last name only.

Hi Sharanjeet,
So I believe your Indian passport has only the Surname name as your full name and the Given name blank.
How does your name reflect on your Govt ID cards and SIN?

For citizenship application, there are 2 name fields

• Family name ( last name) - Mandatory
• Given name ( first name) - Optional

So you can right away use Sharanjeet Kaur as your Family Name and leave Given name field blank.
Please make sure you enter the name as in the latest government ID(provincial or federal) card or SIN card. If not the application will be delayed further.

If indeed you want to use Family name as Kaur, Middle name as Jeet and First name as Sharan, you will have to first get the name change done with the provincial government. Obtain the Name Change certificate. Apply for your provincial ID cards and SIN card. And then only apply for citizenship.

On Indian Passport, I have Given name: Sharanjeet Kaur
On PR Landing paper: Family name is: Sharanjeet Kaur and Given Name is blank

On PR/Health card: There is Name only i.e. Sharanjeet Kaur (Given name & family name is not mentioned on any Provincial ID.

While applying for any job: I use Firstname:Sharanjeet and last name: Kaur
Till now' many people advised to correct the name. I am thinking to apply for citizenship and it is advised to correct it before applying

Kindly provide advise what i have to do in my case. Your advise will be much appreciated. Thank you

I had the same issue with my Indian passport and PR card.

On Indian Passport, I have Given name: Fname Mname Lname and Surname blank
On PR Landing paper: Family name is: Fname Mname Lname and Given Name blank

You have 2 options here
1. Change your name legally in Canada before applying for Citizenship, or
2. After getting a Grant of Citizenship, apply for a Name change before applying for a Canadian passport.

I opted for the 1st way. Submitted a Change of Name application at Service Ontario and got my name split into First, Middle and Last. The entire process took 1 month from the date of submission of the application and receiving the certificate. And another 2 weeks for my new DL and Health cards.

The citizenship application has a section where you can specify the new name ( Family and Given names) and your old name. The entire application will be processed with your new name. You will have to submit a copy of your Change of Name certificate as proof. Also, use your new name and govt ID cards with your new name going forward in any communication with IRCC.

I haven't researched much on the 2nd path.
