Retain: [ri-teyn]
verb (used with object)
1. To keep possession of.
2. To continue to use, practice, etc.

This is why I kept saying automatic since the word retain means to keep what you already have. You shouldn't have to do anything as in automatic.

So the law is not that clear. But since as moejun says that a friend happened to fill papers to prevent from losing citizenship. The law basically means you will still lose it unless you fill papers. In other words, the law is not 100% correct in using the word "retain". But then again the law is written in Filipino not English. Perhaps poor choice of English sentence in translation?

it was written in english. i'm beginning to think this might be a comprehension issue but oh well. i don't really know why this is still an issue since it is clear that "getting" dual citizenship is NOT automatic

to further simplify: a naturalized canadian citizen who lost filipino citizenship (when he obtained canadian citizenship) has to undergo a process to reacquire filipino citizenship. without undergoing said process, he is solely a canadian citizen.
