If I sponsor a spouse inland who is in Canada on a tourist visa, will they become eligible for healthcare? If not, would they become eligible if they get the OWP?

Looks like you’re coming to Ontario so the answer would be no provincial health coverage until they are a PR (at the point the 3 month wait period may also have returned) or they have an OWP and proof of a full-time job that will last over 6 months. Getting the OWP can take 6-8 months so assume there is a good chance they won’t be able to apply for healthcare re diving PR. You’ll need to take out emergency travel medical insurance and pay for any routine expenses out of pocket. If you are thinking about getting pregnant you won’t find a policy that covers the whole pregnancy unless it is a very expensive comprehensive healthcare insurance. To cover any part of the pregnancy you have to have travelled and purchased the plan first. Would read the fine print of any policy.

Ontario. You can get coverage for a year after AIP. IT WAS A PAIN TO DO. I had to call the head office and let them explain to the agent that it is possible etc etc.

Further, I wouldn't count on OHIP as the policy changes easily.

AIP is right before being approved for PR so often you get PR before getting the documentation proving you have AIP and meeting withthe right person and right location or Service Ontario. It is also a huge hassle so many just wait until they get PR. They will still not have OHIP for the majority of the sponsorship process and can’t predict when they will get AIP or be approved. If you have chronic health issues inland sponsorship may not be the best route. If you plan on getting pregnant I would delay for many reasons. No healthcare coverage so you are looking at 10-20k+ out of pocket, you won’t qualify for parental leave having never worked in Canada, It is harder to get a job if pregnant, etc.

Agreed. It was worth it to us as based on the home country of my spouse PR would take longer so AIP came monthssss after PR. But as I said it's a pain and I agree with all your points.
