Karl wrote "I paid $600 per year in the U.S.A. for comprehensive medical insurance, and it was a PPO with thousands of doctors and not an HMO. It was a group rate; if you are not part of an organization that has a group rate, join one. There are also co-ops for health care in the U.S.A."

I only pay 20%, rest 80% paid by my employer. Group plan through United Health Care.

I heard good things about German health care system, non-profit but private with universal coverage.

Generally, for common ailments, how is the quality of care in Canada? For example - Asthma. I have a kid who occasionally suffers from asthma attacks (about 1 or 2 times a year). For such cases would the care be prompt and adequate?

Normally they don't let you die but the ER's are usually busy and if you don't look like you are about to die, you will have to wait. What does your kid need for the asthma attack? Hospital? Or would a walk in clinic be enough? You can usually get into the walk-in clinics faster and once you know the area where you live, you will know which ones have less wait.

However, look into http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buteyko_method I have a friend who is asthma free for 5 years now after he started using those techniques.

Yeah, my kid's case is not serious. We just use the walk-in clinic here. Thanks for the URL on the Russian breathing technique! I have heard about it.
