Hi

I have a job offer in Canada and will be starting work in July. I am a UK citizen and my wife is a Chinese passport holder. She has leave to remain and work in the UK and lives with me in London. My employing agent is sorting out my working permit at the moment. I just wanted to ask if the fact that my wife has a Chinese passport is a problem? I intend to show up at the airport in July with all my documentation and for my wife to be on my TWP as my dependent. Will the fact that she is Chinese present a problem?

Thanks for any advice

As a PRC national she will require TRV (visitor visa) to enter Canada. She will have to apply to London, if she doesn't have any ties to the UK (such as indefinite leave to remain) she may have a problem obtaining the TRV. See: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/index.asp

Thanks PMM - It shouldn't be a problem as she has successfully obtained TRV's for the U.S. and Japan recently, however couldn't she apply for a "Spousal Work Permit for Skilled Temporary Workers" so she can join me later and work in Canada?

Sure, but she still needs a TRV.

Thanks again PMM - We will file the application, see what happens and if it is refused then I'll simply resign the job and return to the UK. I am not being separated from my wife for a long amount of time.

There does seem to be a dichotomy between the two simultaneous applications. One will be for a TRV (temporary, for tourism, no work, return flights etc.) and an application for an TWP (Open work permit to join a spouse who is working in Canada as a skilled worker), both submitted at the same time for the same person. Whilst temporary they seem to be mutually exclusive and unconnected in terms of intention.
