hello,

I have submitted my application in Abril, 2006 with 67 points, but i didn't post them TEF result as i had mention that my level in french is basic level for all band to achieve 2 points and complete my 67 points.

my question is, do i need to pass the 4 bands with basic level or it is enough to achieve basic level in 2 bands only as the basic level for second language give 2 points only even if i achieve basic for the 4 bands,

regards,

If you only claimed and needed 2 points total for French, then it's enough to complete the TEF with basic level in 2 bands. According to http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/EG74.asp you get 1 point per band if you achieve basic level. It's under a table called "calculating your language points". It's the 2nd table under languages. Where they talk about the IELTS and TEF and say maximum 2 points for the basic, what they mean is that if you have basic level on both french and english, you can claim maximum 2 points per band.

You don't understand. Basic level will give you 1 point per each category. This is very clear in the table that I have given you the instructions to find, the 2nd table of the language category at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/EG74.asp where it says "Calculating your language points".

When you look at the table for TEF specifically, it says either official language, 1 point, maximum 2. What that means is that if you score basic level in both english and french, you get 1 point for each language, maximum 2 points per category. So if you score basic level in french every category and also in english every category, you would get 8 points total.

So if you score basic level in french listening and reading and nothing in speaking and writing, you still get 2 points. If you score basic level in all 4, you get 4 points. Get it?

dear leon,

i understand the table very well, but i am about somthing else

my question is if, i claimed for the 4 bands as a basic level(I wrote in my application that i have basic level in the four bands) and just achieve basic level in 2 bands , CiC will still ask me to prove what i wrote to them in my application or it is enough for them the 2 points that I had gained from 2 bands to complete my 67 points.

thank you for your patience

So you are afraid they will accuse you of lying if you didn't make 4 bands? I don't think so. It just means that maybe you over-estimated your french knowledge by mistake on your application. I for example have absolutely no idea what score I would get on IELTS. If I had to guess, I would give myself full marks for English but there's no guarantee that I would actually get that on the test.

There is no way to know. You have to wait until the process it. Worst case, if they tell you that you are 2 points short because they don't qualify your French, you can take the TEF and appeal it. Best case, they don't question it since you are only claiming 2 points for it anway.
