Instead of getting a refund paid out, they transferred the money into an installment account for 2014.. Why? Can anyone shed light?

Thanks a lot.

Hello mikenz,

You may have to pay tax installments towards your 2014 tax balance because your taxes owing in 2014 (estimated) and in 2012 or 2013 is more than $3,000, respectively. Also, you may have not made your March 15, 2014 installment payment (which is the due date for the first payment) which is why the CRA allocated it there appropriately.

For more information, check out the pamphlet: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pub/tg/p110/p110-e.html#whydoyouhavetopaytaxbyinst

Please note that failure to make the installment payments by their due date may result in interest.

Thanks for you reply.. I do not think I owe anyone.

I arrived as a permanent resident in Vancouver in July 2013 and worked from August onwards. I have my T4 and all deductions were done by an accountant. Hence I believe to get a refund on what I paid in taxes.

You should call the CRA at the individual helpline at 1-800-959-8281 and raise this issue with them, and get them to correct it (otherwise installment interest will continue accumulating).
