question about sponsoring someone in the past

I sponsored my brazilian ex husband in 1999.

We split in 2001 although our divorce was only final in January 2004.

I have found out since that he left to go to Brazil without paying his Canada student loans.

Is that going to have some kind of an impact on my current sponsorship of my Mexican husband now?

It shouldn't. As far as I know the sponsor only has to pay back welfare. Student loans aren't welfare, so if you didn't cosign for them you won't be responsible.
It's been quite a while since the previous sponsorship and the divorce, so that looks better for the current sponsorship than if you had just divorced. The first marriage also does not look like a marriage of convenience, given that your ex has left Canada. If your first marriage did look like a marriage of convenience, then that would have a negative impact on the current sponsorship.

Thank you for that response. Appreciate it!

I was wondering if you might possibly know the answer to this question.

My husband has applied for a visitors visa twice before we were married. He was denied on both counts. (The first one was an invitation from me who was only his girlfriend at the time to come and visit, the second time he had an invitation to come as a public speaker for our local spanish church to do a youth program and was also rejected.)

He has been accepted to a college here to do ESL, if he applies for a STUDENT permit this time, what is the likelyhood of getting rejected? We have not sent our sponsorship forms yet, but will be sending them next week when we get his medical results back.

We do ofcourse want to be together and 15 month wait that is designated from Mexico is so depressing, so we are looking for other options.

An application for a study permit can also be rejected if the visa officer does not believe the applicant will leave Canada at the end of it. His previous attempts to get a visa, and then his PR application, will make it look like he is just trying any means to get into Canada. My guess then is that the app for a study permit will be refused. To increase the chances that it will be accepted, send in as much proof as possible that he will leave Canada at the end of it: proof of ties to Mexico such as a job or job offer, proof of enrollment in school after the expected date of return, a lease or mortgage, money in the bank, children left behind, etc.
