Hi guys,

I am new to this community and need some guidance about sponsoring my parents.

I am a P.R holder in Canada and wish to sponsor my parents. I was reading the government of Canada documentation and its mentioned that in order for you to be edible for sponsoring, you must not owe money to the government. I have previous years tax payments that I am still paying that, so I wanted to ask if the money I owe to CRA considered as money owed to the government?

Or can I still sponsor my parents while paying CRA.

Please let me know.

Thanks

You can still sponsor them while owing money to CRA assuming this is related to your tax returns. You cannot be owing money that is related to social insurance repayments. Obviously you must also meet the low income cut off for the last three years in your CRA returns.

Do you mean social insurance or social assistance? Same applies for spouse?
Is it ok if i owe child benifits that i need to re-pay back to CRA, while i am sponsoring my spouse?

Sorry, social assistance (not insurance).

Do you mean CCTB by "child benefits"?

Yes CCTB. Initially, i was paid CCTB for the past two years while i am out of country. CRA now determined that i was not entitled to CCTB and they are asking to repay. I am going to arrange installments to pay back, but i am worried if this will affect my current Spousal Sponsorship application in process.

If you have been outside Canada for 2 years that will have implications on when you can attempt to apply to sponsor your parents. By the time you qualify you likely will have paid off your debt or most of your debt.
