Question about passport

Hello,

I'm getting ready to submit my application for spousal sponsorship within the next month or so. I am a US citizen and my partner is Canadian. We both currently live in South Korea and work as teachers. We will be here until approximately August 2020 and are likely to travel during our vacation time in January. My questions are:

1) When will I need to submit my US passport to Canadian immigration?
2) How long will they hold it for? Will I be able to use it to travel in Janaury/leave Korea next August?
3) If they hold it for the 12 month duration of my application, is it possible to apply for a second passport for travel purposes?

One other question. I just received my FBI background check electronically. Will a print-out of this from the FBI's secure server be acceptable? Or will I need to request a hard copy be mailed to me?
