We had something notarized today by a friend who is a notary public. She didn't stamp the actual document. She gave us another sheet of paper with a paragraph that she filled out plus signed and stamped. But our original document is untouched. I stapled them together. She wrote something in her journal but shouldn't the original document be stamped? Or we could just use that piece of paper with any document since all it has on it for info is my husband's name. It doesn't even name the document. I am sure she knows what she is doing but I just need affirmation. Thank you.

Do NOT send originals documents ever.

They are yours!

And a legalized parer it's quite easy to do;a notary puplic will make a copie of your originals and will stamp on the back and will sign on it.

If she did otherwise maybe your original paper needed to be translated first and after that stamped and signed. I don't know for sure.

My opinion.

Only the criminal record has to be an original in your application.

I did send my marriage certificate along with my application, and I shouldn't have to send the original; I don't think my Embassy will give me back my paper.

I will see that at the righ moment.

Best of luck!

Sorry I didn't explain. This isn't about my application. My daughter and I are flying to Canada but my husband cannot come because he's waiting for his PR. I had to type up a document that shows my husband gives me permission to travel alone with her. And notarize it. I just don't understand why she didn't stamp the actual paper.

They copy the original and notarize the copy. The copy will have either a stamp and signature on it or a seal mark. The front letter is just the guarantee of the notary public that she certifies that the copy is the copy of a original she has seen. All is fine the way it is. Keep the original untouched with you in this case.

Depending on geography, notaries can either add a cover sheet or stamp the actual document - usually if they add a cover sheet they will attach the two documents with a seal and ribbon or a rivet type staple. The Canadians can be pretty picky about traveling with minors without parents - I noticed your visa office is Mexico ... does your daughter have a Mexican passport too (if so, do you have the blanket approval in there for your daughter to travel without both parents? - that could serve as additional proof?).

You may want to take a copy of your husband's passport and keep a cell phone handy in case you get a picky officer at the border ... or if you have time and are close to one, have the Canadian embassy notarize his signature on the doc for you (as a Canadian they used to not charge for this service but I haven't checked in a while and know they had a moratorium for a bit when the tourist visas came out). Don't mean to worry you and chances are you'll be alright but I subscribe to the better be safe contingent for these things ;)

She did not copy it. She just gave us a loose cover sheet.

In this case, the notary doesn't need to copy the document - she shouldn't be notarizing a true copy but instead notarizing your husband's signature that he really signed the letter approving travel.

Folks seem to be replying based on requirements for notarized copies for applications which isn't what you are referring to.

You're welcome - I asked because if her Dad is Mexican she could have a Mexican passport too - a NAFTA girl ;)

Since she didn't touch the original and gave me a loose cover sheet that only says his name - how would the officers know they go together? I could use the cover sheet with anything he signed.
