Have you completed your medical test already?

Just quickly, this is my situation: we're in toronto on work permits, and we got our request for medicals two weeks ago (giving us 60 days to complete them). The problem is that I'm due to have a baby in three weeks. I don't want to hold up the application process but obviously don't want a chest x-ray while I'm pregnant. So I want to see if I can get as much of the medical test done as I can before baby is born, so I just have to get the x-ray soon after I give birth.

Can you explain what the process for the medical is? The instructions we received are a little vague.

If you could answer ANY of these questions, it would be much appreciated:

- Do you go to the approved doctor, they do a physical examination, then give you a referral for bloods and x-rays - which you then take to the places that perform those tests? Is this correct?

- Do you know if there is a time limit on the referrals? Ie you don't have to get it the same day/week?
- What does the physical examination itself consist of? What does the doctor do?

Thanks in advance.

This is the process I went through:

I called to make an appointment with a designated doctor, and my appointment was for a week or a week and a half later.
At the doctor's office - he did my physical, the nurse took my blood, urine, and vision test.
I then had to go to the hospital to get my chest x-ray done.

I was told that the doctor's office would get the x-ray back in about a week after your appointment, and then it gets mailed out after that..

While you could technically go on separate days, I wouldn't do so just because I wouldn't want the doctor's office to misplace my file. Best bet is to make an appointment for your medical exam after you've given birth and can take the X-ray.

[Answer] - Correct. The doctor will only perform a few medical tests correctly outlined by the other forum member. He will provide referrals for blood, urine and xray.

[Answer] - Normally, there is no time limit.

[Answer] - Vision, weight check, breathing, ears, teeth etc...

I went through a similar situation (i.e. wife was pregnant when the medical request was given). Few suggestions

1) After 20 weeks, some doctors claim that chest xrays can be taken by wearing abdominal shield. Ofcourse, it is upto you whether to take or not. Even if you are willing to take the xrays, I have heard that CIC will hold your application until you had given birth. This means that you have to add your new-born as part of the application OR communicate the change in your family composition (if child is canadian citizen).

2) You can take the rest of the medical tests (general physical exam, urine, blood etc) but leave the xray until you had delivered the baby. You will have two things to do once your delivery is over. a) Take XRAY b) Inform the change in family composition.

I took the second option. The advantage in postponing xrays alone is that normally you don't need appointments for xrays, so you can do it at your convenience.

Hope this helps.
