Hello everyone,

There is one question in Generic Application Form where they ask you about if you have lived in a country other than the country of your citizenship for more than six months? Can anybody please guide that if they mean six months consecutively or or it could be separate shorter periods that could be added to be more than six months?

Thanks a lot !

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for ur reply but what I meant was for ex. you lived 4 months once in a country and then 3 months in the same country but this time in a different year. In total it would be 7 months right? but you didn't live consecutively though, so would you say yes to that question or no then?

The form asks "... if you have lived in a country other than the country of your citizenship for more than six months?".

Does the form say that this has to be consecutively? No, therefore just state all countries where you lived for more than 6 months.

Waqas11, the accompanying guide doesn't really clarify it any more than the IMM0008 form itself:

Check the box to indicate whether you have lived in any country other than your country of citizenship or your current country of residence for more than six (6) months in the past five (5) years

I've always assumed they mean six consecutive months, and if they meant any shorter periods adding up to more than six months, they would probably say so. But you could always call CIC to get a more definitive answer (1-888-242-2100). Also, if you are filling out the form on your computer, it is possible that periods of less than six months will be 'rejected', which will confirm that six months is the minimum. Note that the form has been 'updated' as of last month, although it looks exactly the same as the last version (could be some minor change in the drop-down menus).

In my case I have not lived for more than 6 months consecutively. But if I add all periods of my stay in the last five years then it would be more than six months. Those all periods of stay were in one country not in different countries. SO should I say yes and list all the periods because there is not even enough fields there that I can fill up. There are only two fields available.

I talked to the cic call center. They said the six months duration has to fall within a 12 months period. Just wanted to inform everyone.
