My spouse is applying for Proof of Canadian citizenship under Scenario 3 - Born outside Canada to a Canadian parent. Relevant facts:
  • Her father was born in 1934 in the US, left for Canada in the 1950s, and was granted Canadian citizenship in 1958. This required renouncing his US citizenship and we have documentation of this.
  • Her father returned to the US in 1962
  • My spouse was born in the US in 1971 to her Canadian father and American mother
  • The father re-naturalized as a US citizen in 1981 (after the 1977 law allowing dual citizenship). He did not renounce Canadian citizenship during his life.
  • We have my spouse's US birth certificate and her father's Certificate of Canadian Citizenship and are sending colour copies along with the application.

Questions:
  • The last documentation requirement in Scenario 3 is: "proof of other nationalities acquired by you and your Canadian parent before February 15, 1977, if applicable". Do we need to send a colour copy of the father's US birth certificate in the application? We do not have it, but can pay (and wait a month) to obtain it.
  • It is not requested, but should we send proof that he renounced his US citizenship in 1958? Or is it superfluous, due to the requirements for granting Canadian citizenship then in effect in 1958?
Thank you!
