I posted some questions in another thread and got no response. But as this is a little more pressing, I hope someone has some advice for this specific topic.

My fiancé and I are getting married probably sometime in October (I say probably because we have to go through a process to get a divorce auth since I have been divorced in the states, so we're hoping to get that resolved asap). After that happens, I'm looking to join him and stay as a visitor while we submit the sponsorship app and waiting on PR. I have a minor son from my previous marriage who will be with me. I was looking into the minor study permit for him so he could attend school. However I received an email from the school board today informing me that there is a tuition fee of like $11,500 (public school btw!), and I find that outrageous, and completely unaffordable. There is not a tuition free online public school program available to us through K12, I've already checked into it today (none available in New York, and I wasn't aware some states don't offer it, I was planning on this being my backup but that is obviously out).

Anyone else have any experience with this? Any suggestions? There are some online private schools that require tuition, but I don't know if anyone has any recommendations for a specific one or a preference? Any other alternatives? It should only be for one semester.

Hi, I am in the same situation with my 2 kids from my previous marrriage. When we contacted the school board for the area we will be moving to they advised us that we need to give them proof of our application for permanent residency to waiver the school fees. So once you have submitted and received the file number / email from CIC just include that with the enrolment.
Hope this helps.

Edit: we don't need a study permit if the minor child is included in the spousal application.

Ohmygosh, thank you so much!! I didn't think to mention the sponsorship in my email. I just mentioned remaining there as a visitor. But I will email them back and ask! I very much appreciate your response. What province are you working with? Ontario for me. And I have been stressing all day about what to do because I just can't have my son not in school. Hopefully I hear good news!

Also good news! Lol. I just sent them an email explaining that. What a relief! Like I have seriously been freaking out after seeing the tuition cost and then no K12 program available. I hate that there is so much red tape, I feel like there's constant brick walls. My fiancé is more than worth the fight though, sometimes it just feels so impossible. But I won't give up! The process for us just to be able to apply for a marriage license is ridiculous, especially the legal opinion letter. You would think a certified copy of my divorce papers would be enough, at least it should be. I mean I'm from the states, so it really shouldn't be so complicated.

Lol! I had to go through the same when we got married here in South Africa, then we had to get my ex husband to sign off on the immigration and get the document notorised for CIC. And believe it or not we had to have an interview in SA before we could get married as they wanted to make sure it would not be a marriage of convenience here! crazy times but yes I agree the wait is totally worth it

Ahh, yeah. It's easier for us to get married there than in the states, as he'd need a fiancé visa for us to marry here, not just entering as a visitor! Ugh. So we looked into marrying in Ontario, and found out we have to mail in a bunch of stuff; marriage license app, a sole responsibility form (super simple), certified copy of my divorce papers (already have), and the legal opinion letter. The legal letter has to come from an Ontario lawyer and all it is is a letter basically stating why my divorce should be recognized under law by Canada (from what I understand). A lot of attorneys want a ridiculous amount of money for such a letter, but I found one willing to do it for about $200 CAD. Once sent, it takes 3-4 weeks to process, then we receive a divorce authorization allowing us to get the actual marriage license so we can marry. I just want to pull my hair out, lol. They sure don't make any of this easy. I get there's a lot of fraud out there, but for those of us that are genuine, it's so frustrating.

The part in bold is incorrect. There is nothing preventing your partner from entering the US as a visitor, getting married and leaving after the wedding before his visitor visa expires.

Oh okay, thank you. Everything I had looked up stated needing the fiancé visa. I kept asking myself well what if we plan to live in Canada and not the US?! One article even stated as a visitor, they would not be able to marry in the US without the fiancé visa. But I'm glad you cleared that up. I know you can't always believe everything you read on the internet. And that would definitely be a whole lot easier, except his passport is expired and needs a new one. No biggy. But at a job site quite some time ago, he lost his wallet with all of his identifying documents and has only just begun replacing them (I didn't know at the time). So all he has currently is his birth certificate. So he still needs a photo ID. Either way, it's a process, lol. He works a lot (and will also admit he's a procrastinator), so I'm hoping when visiting this weekend, we can get his license. For the lawyer's legal opinion letter, he needs one valid photo ID or two non photo IDs. So with the temp license and birth certificate, we should be good. Getting that second document is the only reason we haven't finished the process of receiving the divorce auth.
