Hi,

For some reason, I was under the impression that I have to pay taxes and duty to import my car into canada. This price included the RIV fees as well as the GST and HST fees.

Today I contacted CBSA and they told me, as I'm landing for the first time as a permanent resident, I do not have to worry about any import or tax fees. This includes my car as well and therefore i do not have to pay any GST and HST fees.

Although this information is straight forward, but due to some confusion, i'm worried i might have some miscommunication with the CBSA officer. Therefore, I'm just trying to verify the validity of this information.

Do I really not need to pay any tax/fees to import my car into canada as I'm landing with it?

If you are landing as a new PR, you are allowed to bring in household goods (including your car) without any duties or taxes. Your vehicle must be listed on your B4 form that you present to customs officers at your port of entry.

I assume you are moving to Canada from the U.S. If you are coming from another country, you should be aware of import restrictions on vehicles from countries outside of the U.S.

Yes, I'm moving to Canada from US. Thank you for verifying this information. :)

Hi Guys,

I have a relevant question.

I am currently in Oman and I have a car imported from US. Is there any restriction on importing a US vehicle to Canada from 3rd country (Oman in my case)
