Question about childbirth in Canada

How will the kids be stateless? if the parents can get visas to come to Canada, then they obviously are already well-established nationals of some country, and that the child will inherit that citizenship.

Canada can not take care of the world.

Other countries require you to be born in the country to secure citizenship or children could be trapped without birth records or passports if countries are not able to produce documents for the child living abroad. I don’t agree with birth tourism but these are some of the complications that are brought up. I hope there can be a solution that bans birth tourism but doesn’t hurt children for life based on decisions their parents have made. Unfortunately I don’t see the political will to change things especially since it really only effects greater Vancouver and GTA. One can still hope.

Maybe allow it for "settled" foreign workers and students as well as PRs? That would cover the "unexpected" while a foreign national is in Canada for an extended period under permit. (study, work, or temporary resident permits)

Just so you know some countries also do have exception just for this case. In case a child would be stateless it will get citizenship of the country it was born. However that means that it could not inherit citizenship from any of their parents. And surprisingly enough that is almost never the case.

This is not 19 century anymore. Back then people almost without much of paperwork could come and settle down. Now practically all countries have a paperwork for their citizens (Yes including such countries as Chad, Mali or North Korea).

I am against birth tourism. The arguments are made because the other countries also have rules and don’t need to give citizenship to people born abroad.

I am 100% support to change the law to the child born in Canada is a Canadian, if one of the parents is PR or Citizen. This can kill at the loot that people take the advantage (Loop hole). The child is stateless or not, that is neither my concern, nor yours, nor our Canadian government, simple enough, that is not our responsibility. Why should we pay for something (be punished) that is not our fault at all?

Canada is a signatory to reduce statelessness, so even if a law was brought in restricting birthright tourism, stateless children born here would still be granted Canadian citizenship.

Finally someone else who knows the big argument against not offering birthright citizenship. At this point there is likely to be very few potential stateless children compared to nearly 5000 child born in Canada through birth tourism. Think the pendulum has swung far enough to do something about the birth tourism.

Yep, and tourists/visitors stick to their plans of visit.
 
again statelessness can be very easily treated as a specifically written exception. If good 150+ countries managed to deal with that problem, how is it, that Canada cannot.
And no I am against any birthright for any temporary visa holders. If they want to stay in Canada and managed to change to permanent citizens, there should be no problem to sponsor a small child (or to add it as a dependant to your application).
If however staying in Canada was really temporary, then child stay will also be temporary.
Just go around to world to see how many countries to have such luxury there (either over the Oceans or south to USA).
