Question about a medical exam

I have made an appointment with a CIC approved physician for a medical exam, and the receptionist told me they would send the results to CIC electronically. But my husband and I are in the process of gathering information and filling out documents, so we haven't even applied for spousal sponsorship yet. Is it OK that I am having a medical exam now? I read someone saying I need to do a medical exam first, but after the receptionist told me they would send the result electronically instead of giving it to me to send to CIC when the rest of the documents are ready to be sent out to them, I am not so sure.

Thank you very much for your help!

This is common. My medical results were sent to CIC around the end of August 2014 and I did not apply until mid September.

Once your application is received someone at CIC will check their system(s) and see that your medical results have been received (they will use your passport details to look your results up).

Just be sure to send in your application soon so that you do not eat in to the 1 year expiry date of your medical results.

yes, it's perfectly fine. CIC won't "open" the medical file until they get your application. i ended up doing my medical 5 mo. before sending in the application. there was no issue at all. the doctor will give you an "emedical" receipt that must go in your package. this is how CIC will connect your medical to your application.

I would like to thank both of you for your replies.

I do have one question regarding what andrew said above however.

It's OK as long as we submit the application within one year of medical exam, or you mean that your application needs to be approved before 1 years has passed since the medical exam was submitted? We can submit the application within 2 months of the medical exam, but it's out of our hands as to when they process our requests (FBI is now taking 12 weeks to process the results of police clearance report, which will definitely slow down the overall processing time.)

CIC has the ability to extend the validity of the medical exam if need be. In the very slim chance the process takes upwards of 12 months at Ottawa, more likely than not, they will be extended to help the applicant get through landing.
