Hi everyone. I will be getting my passport tomorrow. I am informed by Canadian High Commission about my appoved application.

My classes starting from may, But i'm planning to book a flight for the first week of march, as my mother and brother are already there. Before I was in USA as a student and they had a law that I cant enter USA earlier then 30 days of my classes. So Canada has any law like that? Can I enter 2 months before and tell the Immigration officer that I have to meet my family and explore canada as Afterwords i'll be busy in my classes (which is the truth).

Is that okay?

Good Day everyone.

Good Day everyone.

There is no such law in Canada. However we have seen cases where the student has been refused admission and asked to come back closer to the start of studies. It really depends on the officer you see at the airport. The worst that will happen is you will lose the cost of a return ticket

And how convincing for the officer at POE your reasons are for coming early.

Is coming early to see a relative good enough reason for the officer? And if not than how early can I enter Canada? my classes start in September.

This is a DANGEROUS reason. The officer could consider you are not coming to study but for living with relatives, that your INTENTION IS to stay with relatives and SP is just an excuse to get into Canada. There was such a negative case with a girl who came early and said she would like first to visit her friends.

And if not than how early can I enter Canada? my classes start in September.
2-3 weeks ahead. You can explain that you would like to get better options renting a room before other students come, to settle down slowly and not interapting your studies later with necessety to buy whatever you will need to buy to start living in Canada, to study town and its infrastructure : shops, sport venues, libraries, art galleries :D, transportation. Of course you shold be able to show available funds for those extra 2-3 weeks.

Coming to see a relative or a friend for a few months is a very dangerous reason as pointed out by Regina. This will make the VO think that you are not a genuine student but have come to live in Canada.

Also, with the new changes coming into effect on June 1, 2014 for Intl Students, I believe the officers at the airport will be even stricter. They will just assume that you are coming to Canada to work illegally.

There have been cases on this board where students have been refused entry and asked to come back closer to school start date. I personally know of one where the visa was cancelled on the spot and the student was basically "deported" back to India,

Here also was a case when a student was allowed to come 2 months earlier.

But because EVERYTHING depends on the officer at POE it is better to be on the safe side and not to take a risk.

hello
can u tell us what was the reason y that person's visa was cancelled it will be very helpful

person's visa was cancelled
I think the offcer at POE thought a student' s intent was not studing but visiting friends, working (?). THat is why it is important to have you 1st semester paid. ;) You will lose money if you do not go to uni. And if on top not paynig tuition you come TWO months earlier to "visit" friends/relatives - it is a red flag to the ofiicer.

There are couple of dozen of episodes of "Canada Border Security" show. Enter Border Security Canada there in Search and watch how immigration officers work with immigrants. It is facsinating! :)

Guys guys guys. What about my reason? I am coming to my MOTHER not any relative. Secondly, I will say that my mom will leave in a couple of months so I want to spend some time with her in Canada. Secondly, my classes will start in 55 days when i'll arrive there

mother has 5 year visa.
Interesting. What kind of visa is it?

Anyway, it is good and bad. Bad - because you close relatives are in Canada. Good- because they are on proper visas and not illigaly. Bad- becuase CIC will suspect you will follow your brother steps and now when he is here - you even could have some help.

So, if I am in your place I would not go into Canada 2 months before the study starts. As I said 2, max 3, weeks. Then your wish to visit with relatives looks genuine.
