Hello,

I live in Quebec and am native English speaking. When I applied for PR, I did it in French. Now I am getting ready to prepare my citizenship application to submit ASAP. I had been thinking I would do it in French, but now that I am sitting down to do it....I wonder, is there even a point to doing it in French? It is extra work for me, and I would (eventually) want to do the citizenship test in English. So...do those of you who have gone before in this process have any opinions or thoughts on this?

Thanks for your time!

Hi

You won't be penalized for living in Quebec and doing your app in English. Citizenship is federal and you have the right to choose which of the 2 official languages you want to use.

Thanks, canuck_in-uk! That's what I was thinking about the federal-ness of it and language.....

You should do whatever you're most comfortable with.

The test and interview process at CIC Montreal is fully bilingual. There was no disadvantage to doing it in English. Of the interviews I observed while waiting for my own, maybe 1/3 were conducted in English.

Thanks, EileenF. English is my native language, so I definitely most comfortable in it. Though I work in French, so I am quite comfortable in it too. It's just that would have to work harder to make sure I did not make grammatical errors, etc., in French, so it would take more time and effort to prepare in French.
