Qualified teacher in the UK wanting to teach in Canada

Hi,

my partner is a 27 year old and a fully qualified teacher in the UK. We have both got our Canadian visas and will be looking to enter the country early 2023.

she is wanting tocontinue her teaching career when moving over to Canada. We will be settling in either Ontario or BC where we have friends.

can anybody give us some , tips, advice on the best process and any potential stumbling blocks?

as much info as possible would be great !!!

What type of visas? She can’t work in Canada as she needs to be licensed in Ontario or BC. Check the provincial sites, as it can take a long time to become licensed. She can look at working in daycares or as an education assistant in schools.

However, due to Covid and labour shortages she may get lucky and be hired. She needs to check schools boards and job postings. In Ontario there are 4 public school boards. If she is fluent in French then she will have an easy time to find employment if the school boards are hiring without licenses.

Did she take a medical? Does her IEC visa say she can work with children or in a healthcare setting? Or says she cannot? She may not know until she enters Canada. If it states she cannot then her permit will have to be modified and she will need to take a medical, and wait for approval. Licensing for teaching can take up to a year.

Covid has lead to many changes when it comes to hiring teachers. Due to shortages many hiring policies have been changed because in some districts there has been a need to get any form of adult into the classroom. This may only be temporary. In some provinces it has always been easier to teach if you are willing to go to remote cities. Due to a shortage of French teachers in some provinces it has also been easier to teach if you can teach in French. There are huge varianilities depending on which board you want to teach for (if you are not a practicing Catholic you are unlikely to be hired for any Catholic teaching board), what province you want to work in and what area you want to work in. Private schools also have different teaching requirements and are more likely to hire unlicensed teachers. You’ll need to speak to licensing boards in Ontario and BC to get more specific information but knowing where you want to live will also be helpful. For example if you are willing to teach anywhere in the province you may get a different response than specifying you want to teach in the GTA for example.

En Ontario, il y a 4 conseils scolaires publics. Si elle parle couramment le français, elle trouvera facilement un emploi si les commissions scolaires embauchent sans permis.
