This is super useful man. Thank you so much. I am travelling on 11th feb so will apply in the portal today. Just one thing if you can confirm for urgent processing just tickets was enough or you provided some solid reasoning. For us its my wife office commitment so can we just write in explanation ?
Really appreciate yiur quick response
No worries! Happy to help, Urgent processing requires you to choose a reason from a menu which includes an "Other" option along some other options. We chose "illness of a family member" since thats why we are travelling and need to return on March 6th. We used a letter of explanation as the document in the Urgent processing section. And then uploaded flight tickets in the 'Supporting documents' section. If your reason is a work commitment, then you can explain that in a letter of explanation and upload that in urgent reasoning section and then add your confirmed return flight tickets in the supporting documents as proof. Upload all the applicable supporting documents requested in the checklist and you should be good.

Since my wife hasn't received her first PR card (she landed recently), we uploaded COPR in supporting documents.

Hello everyone! These forums have been very helpful to me and I want share my experience and timeline to help others.

I applied for my wife's PRTD as Urgent using the portal. We have confirmed return tickets to India and were advised by the IRCC agent that we can apply upto 2 weeks before leaving Canada since we have confirmed return tickets ( I am aware that the IRCC website says you need to be outside canada, but I called IRCC multiple times and even spoke to the same agent twice to confirm that its okay to apply two weeks before leaving Canada becase we have return tickets).

Timeline:
29th January 2023 - applied for PRTD (urgent)
2nd February 2023 - Received passport request letter
14th February 2023 - Will be reach Delhi (India) and submitting passport at VFS (VAC) for PRTD stamping.

Will make sure to update the timeline with future updates after VFS processing.

Note: There is a known glitch in the PRTD portal where after submitting the PRTD application - If the status is 'submitted' and View button is disabled but there is a Return Reason - "Wrong application". This is a glitch IF your status is submitted and view button is disabled. However if your status is "returned" or View button is active it is not be a glitch and you might have to take action on your application. Hope this is helpful. Thanks
This is very helpful. I was also under the impression that PRTD can only be applied from outside Canada.

But you and another member here have noted that IRCC hotline informed you of applying for it before leaving. Please post your experience of submitting passport on Feb 14th for passport stamping. This is useful information.

Happy to help. Will definitely update with my experience here after passport stamping!
I would like to emphasize on the point that we were told by IRCC phone hotline that we can apply 2 weeks before our flight out of Canada because we have confirmed return tickets.
Make sure to include your flight tickets in supporting documents and mention it in your letter o explanation.

I know this information of being allowed to apply before leaving canada if you have return tickets is not listed anywhere on the ircc website. I took a chance and applied on the word of the agent.
Hopefully IRCC will add this to information to their website too.

Applying before you leave Canada is either a new policy or incorrect information. Unfortunately the customer service line at IRCC is often incorrect so it will be interesting to hear what happens.
Thats what i am scared of as well. But there are lot of ppl here who have done the same and 2 weeks thing is not written anywhere hence its a call we might have to make whether we should wait or apply from here only. We will be in India for like 5 weeks so one way is we might apply the day we reach India since processing is happening rather quickly

Hi @Alt_232 , I am sorry I didn't get the glitch part, could you please explain what does it mean? Is there an issue with the application when view button is disabled?

Hi! I am just posting on here to share my experience regarding applying for an urgent PRTD from INSIDE CANADA. I submitted my application online. In the beginning of the application I chose I am "outside Canada" option to access the PRTD application, otherwise it would give me the PR renewal application (which I already have pending). Before submitting my application, under Consent and Declaration, it asks again have you left Canada or still in Canada? I clicked "inside Canada" and then proceeded to submit my application.

I submitted my application on: Feb 7, 2023

Passport Request: Feb 10, 2023

I am travelling in 2 weeks so I will be sending my passport to the nearest VAC as soon as I reach my destination. They have given me 30 days to submit my passport in the letter.

I have been told that this is misrepresentation and that I may have my PRTD denied/refused so I will update you guys if that happens. I don't mean to misinform anyone but I will let you know what happens as I move along with the process.

Does filing for a PRTD automatically cancel PR Card application or the PRTD has no bearing on the PR Card application?
No, I don't think so. A PRTD is a travel document and proof of PR status, same as a PR card. PRTD is meant to be a temporary solution for entering Canada if you don't have your PR card. It is only valid for one-time entry. Although, I've read people were given multiple entries valid for about a year lately. You can have an application active for both. I applied for a PRTD while I am waiting for my PR card renewal. I am not expert though.

I called an IRCC agent yesterday and asked her if I can apply for PRTD while I’m in Canada (not urgent application). She said no. However, when I asked her how long will it take to get a PRTD, she said it depends on the local visa office. Looks like I have to call the visa office on Monday.
