Canadian wife wants to sponsor me. We are both healthcare professionals, I've been working in the US and she is finishing up school / certification and not working yet. I'm concerned about the Support part of the application, though it seems like it must be pretty common for couples to have only one partner working, and certainly sometimes the working partner isn't the Canadian?

We've written up a statement, it's basically my current savings, income, and research on how professionals do in Ontario with our credentials, job searches, outlook etc (it's not bad). Does this have a good shot at working, based on the fact that I'm the current source of "household income," and will continue to support myself (and her)? Or, are they just looking specifically for a Canadian citizen to say "I have X dollars per month to spend on this person"?

If your partner is a Canadian citizen, she doesn't need to meet an income test or anything like that - she just needs to have a plan for how she will be responsible for your expenses for three years, which is the length of time attached to the undertaking she signs.

If the plan is to use your funds from your current income, and a job in the future that she has a high prospect of getting, it may well be okay.

I'm sure you're already aware that transferring licensing from the US to Canada can be quite challenging for some fields.

Additionally, if she is in the US with you, you need to have well documented plans to return to Canada.

My Canadian wife was a full-time grad student (worked minimally) when we applied and waited for a decision. Besides filling out the forms of past/current income, she wrote a very brief letter noting that she was a full-time student, had some bursaries/financial aid, and would likely find a job quite easily given her field. In our shared letter, we stated that while she was a student, I was working and studying remotely from Canada. I provided an employment letter which stated my meager earnings. That was all we did. No statement of savings, no job prospects talk (inland app), etc. We had no problems. I've read of others not having problems, too.

Each case is different of course, but like the poster above said, there really is no income requirement for this app. The sponsor will have to sign off on providing for the PA for three years, but that's the extent of it.

I see you are an MD. Is Canada hiring in your field? Many specialists aren’t able to find employment in Canada or are limited to patching really short locums across the country. Can be both spouses savings and income potential if they have the a realistic ability of finding employment soon in Canada.
