Question for everyone... when you are asked for proof of residence what does that mean?

Currently our app is "in process" (one of those weird Aug 6 ones). Submitted May 29, AOR about a month later, SA about 2 months later. Medicals received.

We are about to go on a trip in the states (my wife is American, I am Canadian) that will be for like about 2 months (maybe 2.5). In the mean time, I'm putting all of my stuff in storage here in Canada and will be moving into a new place when I return. I've lived where I live for over 6 years. My wife has a U.S. address but has been "visiting" me in Canada for almost 3 months.

I'm worried that while we're away on this trip, one of us will be asked for proof of residence (as I've seen others saying here) and "temporarily traveling for 2.5 months" might make things complicated? What are you asked to provide? How common is it to be asked for that?

I'm basically clueless on the whole thing but thought I should find out before we go in case I need to take something with me to mail to CIC while I'm away?

Keep some proof of your 6 years of habitation at your current place.

I assume you got your AOR/SA by email? Any documents request will go to you and your spouse's email. Just make sure your mail is forwarded just in case.

OK so you think I should just have Canada Post forward my mail to a temporary address but keep my old address with CIC until I return and get a real address?

Just curious what kind of stuff they ask for when they ask for proof of residence but also what are the common situations where they ask for that and why?

You could, or just change it to your address in the US. But you are on a vacation, not residing there, so I think it is ok to forward your mail. You are allowed to leave or live in another country while an outland app processes, so I am not sure why you are so paranoid about this. If your application goes that fast that you are still in the US, you won't get any document requests like that. Ours was blazingly fast and it still took almost 4 months total.

Proof of residence documents: employment letter, pay stubs, T4 slips, bank statements, utility bills (with address on them), tenancy agreement/mortgage papers. I was on vacation for 2 months when this was requested and just made sure I had all my documents on me before I left. I am a teacher and got an employment letter (June, 2015) and got our residency request on Aug. 21. I was so glad I had all the documents on me to submit them (scanned/emailed). I have lived in BC my entire life and got this request. I also think many recent people that have had there status change to "in process" have received this request. It is better to have the information on you or get your documents forwarded to your addy in the US.

But you didn't get a doc request until recently, so according to your timeline that is 6 months after your AOR. I don't think they would get a doc request that fast, if they are leaving for the US soon and will be back in 2.5 months. Still I agree it is a good idea to have the information ready.

Thank you! I will bring some of those things with me. I submitted two letters from both of my employers with my application but perhaps I could bring another or copies of the ones I already sent? I can definitely bring pay stubs, t4 slips, bank statements, and some utility bills. I could bring a copy of my tenancy agreement.

Can I ask, when they asked you for proof of residence did they specify exactly which things they wanted or just like, send some of the things you mentioned but not all are required? I won't have a current tenancy agreement after this month, only a previous one.

Aquakitty, I won't have an address where I'm traveling in the US (I won't be in one place). I guess I'm paranoid because I'm ending my tenancy here at the end of this month and then going on the trip. I am just worried it will look bad if I give them info about a place I USED to live instead of currently live. I just don't really know why they ask for proof of residency etc or what their purpose is. Anyway Im thinking what I'll do is have my address forwarded to my best friend's house--that's where I'll likely be living upon my return anyway. I won't have a tenancy agreement since my friend is on the agreement and I will just be a room mate. Hopefully tenancy agreement is not a REQUIRED thing to have IF they even ask? But you make a good point about the timeline being too fast for this to be a problem. It's just, with all the fuss on the boards about being "in process" I have no idea if I'm in for a super fast time line surprise or a long haul wait.
