Proof of Relationship to Sponsor...

Hey everyone,

I am sponsoring my spouse with an inland application. She is from Brazil and I'm Canadian.
I'm looking over the checklist and on page 6, question 7 it asks to list 2 of 3 options (Lease/rental agreements, utilities, same address) and we can't prove any as we've both been travelling together since we met. We have stayed with my parents a few times though so I'm wondering if I can have them write a brief letter saying we stayed with them, rent free. I've read other posts of people doing this but want to be sure that it's enough. Would the letter need to be hand written or could it be typed with their signatures at the bottom?

Also on the bottom of page 6 it asks to supply 1 document from 3 of the following and I'm wondering if our marriage certificate would work for the option: Important Documents showing that we are recognized as each other's spouse.

Hope someone can help! ;D

I wish! It's on the document checklist for spouse.

Can anyone help with this?
When i did mine it was the old application and the check list had items for spouse and items for common law that did not apply to me. Like if u live together, they usually ask that as proof of common law relationship

Maybe someone can advise u that did the new application package

I think you have gone past the married checklist requirements and are working from the common law section. Many married couples as you say could never produce those documents as most live in two different countries.

Please, I've been looking over this paperwork every day for the last month. It's the right checklist. IMM5533
The question is: Have you and your sponsor been married for a minimum of 2 years as of the date of application?
We just got married a few weeks ago so I answer no and then I have to provide documents to prove that we live together.

I used the NEW APPLICATION and i had to include that stuff as we do live together -- i listed my husband as a tenant on my lease and he is added to my insurance policies as well as my beneficiaries on various policies -- i have seen people state that they would get their parents to write letters -- note that these people are getting these letters notarized. you have no choice but to submit your marriage certificate, it is one of the requirements. do you guys have a joint account or anything that ties you two together other than the marriage certificate?

for those stating that the items requested are for common law, that is incorrect. i married my husband and we LIVE TOGETHER in Canada and this is required with the NEW package. for common law, they have a completely different check list.

Thanks for confirming that I am not crazy! Haha. Anyway, yes we do have a joint account and a piece of paper to confirm that.
I had no idea that the letter would need to be notarized so thanks for mentioning that. As my parents are in Ontario and I'm in BC do you think it's fine for me to type out the letter on their behalf, email it to them to get signed and then have the signed copy scanned and emailed back? This would obviously be faster but I'm guessing it's probably better to have the original copy signed and snail mailed back.
Or...
I'm wondering if I select no under the question asking if we live together as we've technically been travelling together with no fixed address. And then I could write a letter explaining the situation. Is living together and travelling together considered the same thing?

i would keep it as yes... i would ask your parents to MAIL you the letter and you take it to the notary... this way its original.. you know what i mean

i dont think travelling and living together are the same thing in the eyes of cic... its better to remain honest. is your wife here in canada? looking at your original post, youre applying inland which indicates that you BOTH live in canada.. jsut want to make sure that maybe thats what the issue is as well?

Yes, I agree - the issue may be that you're applying inland, not outland. On the outland application, there are six categories from which you can choose to provide proof of your relationship. I haven't seen the inland application, but it sounds like they expect you to be living together if you're inland, so they assume you'd have that sort of proof.

So should I have my parents handwrite a letter? Is this better than typing one out?

And yes, my wife is here in Canada with me on implied status and she is waiting for a visitor visa extension while we prepare her sponsorship application for PR. So we are both living in Canada but travelling as well...staying with friends, family and even camping. The main issue is proving our address. I use my parents address back in Ontario but because we are in British Colombia, we're having documents sent here to friends and families addresses here. I have written letters to attach to the application explaining our situation so hopefully it's enough.

I had a notarized letter from my parents and my wife had one from her parents stating our relationship is genuine and I also had one from my parents stating we are currently living at their house

Just a suggestion, but what about a joint bank account, a joint credit card (just get an extra card on yours then send in the statement) or life insurance policy?

Thats what we used, and it was enough. Anything that you have, even if you are travelling right now and moving around, there must be some things that come to you, even if they are sent to your parents or friends and family, just find something that you could add to show proof of relationship. It doesn't matter that you are moving around and aren't settled - just pick something you can add her to, and as many things as you can think of.

Hey, thanks for the response! We do have a joint account so we are including that for sure. Plus I've had my parents, sisters, aunt and uncle write letters about our relationship so I think we should be fine. I was also finally able to ask these questions to a human over the phone through cic and she said the letters do not need to be notarized.
