I want to sponsor my husband for PR inland, but am a bit confused about the proof of income. I've been living overseas with my husband for a while now, so my most recent Canadian tax return is from 2006, but I do have last year's from Indonesia. Do I send that, or the 2006 one, or do I just write a letter explaining why I don't have a recent Canadian tax return? Thanks so much.

Hi there!

I've been outside Canada for over 6 years now, so didn't have an option C. I just wrote down what I'd been doing here, etc (I am currently a full-time student so paying taxes anyway) and wrote a letter stating all of that. I included a letter from my university saying that I am currently enrolled and also bank statements (I get a stipend - a student living allowance - but it's not 'income') showing everything. You'll probably be fine just giving all your info and maybe writing a letter just explaining, but it shouldn't be a problem!

I've been living out of canada for 9 years now.

I sent my last canadian Option-C printout (from 2001) my most recent year US taxes AND a letter explaining why I don't have a more recent option-c.

It was a very brief paragraph that just said that since I've been living outside Canada, I haven't been filing taxes in Canada, and instead of my most recent year OPtion-C, I included MY most recent Option-C as well as a copy of my US tax forms from 2009. I think the letter alone would have been sufficient, but the other stuff was handy, and I thought - why not??

One word of advise if you've been living outside Canada and sponsoring your spouse to become a PR is to provide evedence /proof that you intend to move to Canada like a job offer, apartment lease, etc.
