Indeed Scotiabank is the best! They have for newcomers free acct for 1 year and u can get visa (credit card) with them too without locking your funds for 1 year (other banks do just secured visa-they lock$1000.00 CAD in investment), besides to that u may get safety deposit box for 1 year for free, later it's around $40.00+tax per year (small box).
All these puts SCOTIABANK high in my eyes.

As of ATM's scotia has less than CIBC, but service is better in Scotia, CIBC is not a competitor for Scotiabank at all, TD bank and BNS (Bank of Nova Scotia) usually on the top, believe me, based on the reports (i'm not allowed to provide the link)
