Progressive Experience

Hi there,

I am new here. So, I would start there. Firstly, thank you all. If it is a helpful platform, or a community to be more human, then it is only because of each one of you. Secondly, being a stranger here implies that I may be totally ignorant of what is desirable in a question, in an answer, or how to talk generally, as if I have entered a remote, isolated tribe. So, please kindly feel free to suggest edits.

About the question: I graduated in Aug 2017 from Chemical Engineering Technology (Advanced diploma). My attempt to get a job was met with silence along with occasional phone and in-person interviews. Thanks to some good people, I took up a cashier job at a currency exchange place, though having 0 zero experience doing such a thing. Now, after 6 months of doing the job, I am being offered the position of supervisor (NOC 6314 or 6211), kind of like a assistant store manager. Before accepting the offer, I would like to know that is 5-7 months of experience enough to qualify as progressive experience? I doubt it , but I have been wrong before in many a thing.

It would be nice to have some real examples in answers, though reasoning alone is also helpful.

Cheers!
Jas

Edit 1: After posting this, I read about progressive experience. Basically, it means that there has to be increase in duties and responsibilities. In my case, I have progressed from doing simple cash exchanges to money orders, addressing customer complaints, doing inventory, ordering what is needed, sending money to different countries. Recently, I have also trained a new hire too. Currently, I am helping organize the material for an upcoming audit. There is certainly a certain progress in the complexity of tasks. But I am not sure, this feels a bit a subjective.

I am not sure what you mean by progressive experience. I have not heard this term before. As I understand, you were hired under the premise of a particular role. You are now being promoted into a new role. These are considered two different jobs.

The cashier job would not be considered skilled enough to use for a CEC application. You could potentially get points for the new supervisor role.

"progressive experience" is not a concept that has relevance to the CEC Program or skilled immigration in general.

You need 1 year of full-time experience (or the equivalent in part-time) in a SKILLED occupation to qualify. "Skilled" is determined by the NOC that best reflects your job duties and responsibilities. Your cashier position does not qualify as skilled. If you accept the supervisor position, you would need to work a full year (full-time) to qualify.

Hi Jes,

Thanks for the help, first of all. I cannot express in words my gratefulness and my joy knowing that there are people, people like you and @tessa2105 , who are happily willing to help.

I understand that progressive experience may not be a concept relevant to CEC. But, there are positions and situations which require it, or at least require a closely related concept. For example, in my case, for my promotion from teller to teller supervisor, I must convincingly demonstrate that I can do the job to the officers. In other words, I must demonstrate that I am able and have performed the duties in NOC 6314 (I feel like I am already doing most of the duties described in it.) Since, I do not have explicitly related education or experience in a teller job except this current one, I must show that this current position has prepared me enough and I have learnt from it enough to deserve the supervisor position.

Kind regards
Jas

Regardless of the prerequisites for a position, there is a distinction between your original role, and promotion to supervisor. If you were not promoted to supervisor and your original position was initiative of the responsibilities of a skilled NOC, then your employer would have to write two separate job letters. Each position should match the majority of duties and responsibilities for the NOC code. Not only a couple.
