Hi,

I've applied at Fanshawe postgraduate program: Professional Financial Services
My profile is Bachelor of Economics 73%, 7 years of work exp in securities industry, Toefl score-total 79, R: 17, L: 18, S: 19, W: 25.
Refused from GBC because of low Toefl. What are the chances for admission at Fanshawe?
I don't need proof of English for student visa. Need your advice for LOA!

Well its 6.5. According to table I found on wiki Toefl range from 79-93 points is equivalent to IELTS 6,5.
But on the other hand, admission requirements states 88+ points for Toefl.

Just received LOA! It took only 2 days after submitting application!

It is conditional and says:
''Grade 12 English or one of the following equivalents: (1) Acceptable achievement in an English Language Evaluation test at Fanshawe College, (2) An acceptable (no older than 2 years) Toefl or IELTS score. Only originals will be accepted.''

Could experts explain to me, since I'm not quite sure how does it works! Since I got 79 points at Toefl, and their requirement is 88+, does it mean I will have to enroll ESL courses at Fanshawe? And if yes, when will I have to do it? Do I have to arrive early, during the summer time, before my class' start in Sept? And what if I don't manage to finish successfully ESL courses before the beginning of my program? What happens then? The next program term is Sept 2014 !?

Anybody knows the answers ?

1st of all you are from economics background but applied in "Professional Financial Services & International Business Management"

I also receive LOA from Fanshawe and it was conditional that I have to submit IELTS of 6, so I sited for IELTS. My BBA major was in Finance.

Though you got LOA for "Professional Financial Services" there will be huge possibility of visa rejection as you are from economics background. They might reject you by telling "your proposed studies are not reasonable in light of one or more of the following: your qualifications, previous studies."

2nd is that ESL is a costly program, if you can, do it.

Hi

I said that I have 7 years of work exp in securities industry. Worked in brokerage, investment dealer companies, for an investment bank. Not to mention that I've past 2nd part of Canadian Securities Course.....So, my studies are definitely reasonable and they are in accordance with my qualifications.

As for ESL, I will take the Toefl again and reach their requirement of 88. I don't understand how they told you to submit IELTS of 6, when requirement is 6.5 at minimum!?

Overall IELTS score of 6.0 corresponds to 79 in TOEFL, and 6.5 in IELTS to 90 in TOEFL. I took both exams, and TOEFL seemed way more difficult. To do well in IELTS it makes sense to concentrate more on writing part if you have time to retake a test before your study begins. Otherwise, if it's not possiible you should enroll in ESL courses at school. I know that in most of the cases the offer of conditional admission is made until you satisfy language requirements.

So would you suggest me to take IELTS instead of Toefl? Since you said that you have taken both, Toefl and Ielts, I'm in a dilemma what to do. I've taken Toefl two times, and got 25 in writing, but other sections are bellow 20. Will I have enough time to prepare myself and take IELTS lets say by the end of July? Or maybe its better to concentrate on the third try of Toefl!?

Any suggestions?

I'd suggest you to retake IELTS. It's way easier to score 6.5 than 90 in TOEFL. In my opinion IELTS reflects the scores that closer match the level of english you have. I know several people who did 110+ in TOEFL and their english is pretty bad. Listening and reading parts are more less similar by structure in both tests. However, speaking part in TOEFL depends on degree of luck you have on a test day. The types of questions being asked aren't easy to answer even in native language. IELTS is more adaptable in this sense. First part is a brief introduction of yourself. Then examiner will give you a question card and one minute to prepare (not 30 sec as for TOEFL). Third part is an interaction with examiner on topic related to the question card. Since you have two months from now on to prepare, I recommend you to concentrate more on writing part. This is the one that differ more in IELTS. Thus, you will have balanced band scores.
