Processing Time question

Hi,
I am just getting ready to send off my application to Vegreville and noticed today that processing times are listed as 9-10 months for first stage approval and then 9 months for second stage. Does this mean a total of 18-19? Or do they get processed at the same time? Help! If 18 months is true, forget it... I'm applying through Buffalo!

The processing times are consecutive, not concurrent, so yes, it can take 18-19 months to be approved Inland.

If your applying inland, make sure to apply for an OWP (Open Work Permit), at least you will be able to work to pass the time.

Me personally, i don't care how long it will take if i get OWP after my sponsor is approved

You do know you don't get the OWP until you are approved for AIP right? Which is after 9-10 months.
If you are approved for AIP then you will get the OWP and be able to work for the rest of the time it takes to process the application.
Also, when you get AIP they don't just approved the sponsor but they also approve the genuineness of the relationship.

If you're American you should not choose to apply inland.

I agree. I am American and applied inland but I had different and more personal circumstances to consider with that decision.
I don't regret applying inland but that is because I know it works with our specific situation.

However, most cases if you are American you would be much better off applying Outland. You can still apply outland and stay as a visitor in Canada during the duration.

As you should be. You can stay with your partner in Canada as a visitor while your (outland) application is in process.

Thanks for the answer!

So now my question is...

I'm currently in Canada on a temporary foreign work permit. I've had it since September and it's good until September 2011. I am planning to apply for a work permit extension this summer, because whether I apply through Buffalo or through Vegreville, I won't be able to work any other way before September. BUT... if my application for a work permit extension were denied and I had applied through Buffalo, would I have to Canada until September and wait until I'd been approved to return, or could I just get put on a visitor record? Thanks for any help...

Well are you still working for the same company now?
If you are wanting to apply to Vegreville you could always include the OWP application with the PR application before your current work permit expires and would not have to worry about whether it will get extended. If they receive the OWP with the PR application at Vegreville before your current work permit expires, then you would be on "implied status" for however long it takes them to decide on AIP which right now is 9-10 months. And with that implied status you would still be allowed to work but you would have to work for the same company.

I figure if you really want to stay and even though you are American, if you are already able to work during the process then the wait shouldn't be unbearable. Now of course if you got that route and you get AIP after 9-10 months then you will be issued an Open Work Permit which would no longer restrict you to working for the same employer. You would then be able to work for another employer if you chose to.

But then again in all seriousness, if you could get that PR application done and sent outland soon, you could be finished with PR and all even before your current work permit expires and thus wouldn't need to worry about extending it. Really the decision is just up to you and what you see fits your situation best.

Hmmm.... ok. Yeah, I would work for the same company, but I just hate the idea of not being able to leave the country if I had to. Can I apply through Buffalo and still apply for an extension on my current work permit?

Also, what does it take to get my medical exam results switched from inland to out? I did them on the In-Canada ap. Would I have to get a new medical to get them sent to Buffalo?
