If you don't have the new OWP by the time your current OWP is set to expire, I would apply to change your status to visitor as insurance. There's always some possibility that either your PR application or your OWP application might be returned due to an error. When this happens, people sometimes find themselves out of status and this complicates life greatly. So I would apply to extend your stay as insurance.
but wouldn't it take them all kinds of time to get back to us on the visitor status too? if it seems like it takes a long time to get any response at all from anything sent in

The risk with the OWP and/or the Inland application, is that if either are returned because of an error on your part (such as incorrect fee for the OWP [common mistake], or an outdated form or missing signature in the Inland application, you could lose Implied Status. What scylla has suggested is the safest way to ensure that you at least maintain legal status...just in case. It's a personal choice, but it's important for you to have the information.

the owp and the visitor extensions are processed by different departments/officers. just because they take a long time to process owp and inland sponsorships, doesn't mean the visitor extension will take as long. one thing has nothing to do with the other, so the time lines are not going to be the same. also, the extension can be done online, and it's recommended to do it at least 30 days before your current status expires. you will have implied status until you get a response.

ok thanks, can a person get a Visitor permit even though they have been in the country already for over 5 years on student and work visas?
