Hello all! I have a quick general question.
This is regarding family sponsorship outland application (to Canadian embassy in another country)

After you receive a letter from the VO abroad stating that they have completed processing of the PR application for your spouse, and they need to submit their passports/travel docs, plus two recent pictures and sponsor's current address for issuance of the visa, is that the end of the application process (stating that the visa will be issued within 5 business days)?

After my spouse receives the visa, is she free to then leave the country and come to Canada?
Please let me me know,

Thank you and best of luck to everyone!

yes, that's exactly the reason why she is getting the visa, so she can leave her country and go to canada. as soon as the VO sends her passport back, she will have a certain amount of time to "land" in canada. her confirmation of PR will have an expiry date, so she needs to travel to canada before it expires or she will have to start from scratch.

Thank you so much!
After she comes to Canada, what will we need to do to finalize the PR? Will she also get her passport back with some paperwork that we will need to fill out in Canada in order to get her PR status?

Thank you very much!

Also, do you know how often ECAS gets updated, as the status is till "Application received"?

when she shows up at the border, she will show her passport and give them her COPR that has been mailed to her. They will ask her questions and confirm a mailing address. She and they will sign the papers, they will probably stamp something, give her back her copy of the copr and she is officially a PR. She is free to live, work and enjoy life in canada. Her PR card will be mailed to the address she gives them.

She did not receive a COPR (Confirmation of Permanent Residence?) yet.
Then again, the email only came in today...

Is that something that they will give her with the Visa once she submits the passport?

You are the best!

So that's what they need the "Sponsor's updated address" (my address for).

I wish I could give you more Karma, but I have to wait another 170 hours :)

some visa exempt applicants are waived the passport request, i can't imagine those needing a visa would ever be waived. It is unknown why this is currently happening. My theory is because the passport's validity date is over a certain amount of time and it's unlikely the applicant would have changed their legal name. my understanding about ppr for visa exempt applicants is that it is to verify the passport info is the same as when the application was submitted. visa exempt applicants do not send in the passport, they send a copy upon request.

It would be interesting to see if more men applicants get the ppr waived than female, since men don't normally change their name for marriage.

Interesting point... so in the case of US passports, they're not being stamped...just verified?...This is if the VO actually requests the passport?

for us passports, there is no visa counterfoil that gets inserted. this is only for those requiring visas to enter canada. for visa exempt, they use the scan to verify the applicant's info matches what will be written in the COPR. I beleive at landing, the border agent stamps the passport and writes the date of entry. i've read it's very important to make sure they actually write the COPR number under the stamp or it will be difficult to obtain a SIN# later.

That makes sense. Thanks rhcohen, glad to see you have your landed date coming up at month end ;) ;) You've given a lot of great info on this site. When I initially joined, for some reason I was thinking that we had to go to NY because of the interview location we picked...on the application form (my husband lives in PA USA). Stupid me, I didn't even notice that the SA letter said it was going to Ottawa for processing. Thanks for enlightening me :)

yeah, i also chose NY for interview location (i'm in CT). obviously that form is way old, as LA is the only one available now! the only reason i figured it out was because i was on the ny visa office website looking for something, and it had no reference to family class processing. i didn't use this forum until AFTER sending in my app. i'm kinda of glad too, otherwise it would have made me even more of a lunatic!

it's confusing, and takes a lot to figure it all out, especially because the website is so inaccurate! i'm glad to be a resource to make it less confusing.

the process is stressful. even now, i will not sleep comfortably until i land at the end of the month! it will be 3 days before our 1 year anniversary, so there's a lot to celebrate. i will continue my prayers to the universe it all goes well!

Honestly, this forum stops me from wasting my time going on CIC website to see the same status daily. It's kinda nice to know that you are not alone in all of this. Do you have any idea how much time an immigrant gets to be 'landed' after the PR is issued?

usually it cooincides with the anniversary date of the medical exam. though, i was given a bit of a grace period and my medicals were extended a few weeks past the 1 year mark. i have until dec 10 to land. i imagine it's different for every applicant and visa office. i've read where some people only have weeks. i am not sure if those reports are actually true.
