Problem with the new CIT0002E Oct version: Question 9C

Question 9C asks you to answer whether if you have lived outside Canada and if so to fill Residence Outside Canada form CIT 0177. This form is used only for people requesting their residence to be considered because they were crown servants or a family member of a crown servants.

The wording of the question needs to be fixed for those people who have lived outside Canada during the relevant period (like me) but have not served as a crown servant or being a family member of a crown servant. Clicking on the help button will clarify it, but they way it is now, it might confuse those who do not click on the help button.

My husband came here in Canada in November 2013, however, the eligibility period shown in the online calculator is from 2012 (which is 5years ago) - date of application. So the period before coming here in Canada is somehow considered to be residence outside of Canada within the eligibility period. So confusing! If he is answering yes, he has to fill out CIT 0177 as per instruction but this form is really not applicable to him at all.

Yes Off course we have to check "No". Just discussed with immigrant consultant regarding this issue.

If you were not a crown servant, no

- Print the CIT 0177 form and fill your name and DOB. Then write N/A on part A and B.

- Attach a cover letter stating that you never worked for crown services and the time you lived outside of Canada doesn't effect your eligibility.

Yes this is a very common question as this part is confusing. The correct way which is tried and tested is as follows :

Hi everyone..i do have the same problem..i landed 2014 but my eligibility period in the online calculator is from 2013..so like everybody said here..i really do have to say yes to the question because technically i did lived outside the country..and submit the CIT 0177 form with explanation?I just wanna make sure that its the best approachthank you guys for posting this iit really do help a lot..

I don't think you need to fill form 177 as that is only for crown servants. I'd discussed this issue with immigration consultant at my time of filing application.

Hi amanburki - My scenario is my company sent me on a 1 month training to NewYork. Does this mean I lived there, so should I say yes to question 9 (c) as lived outside Canada , 10 (a), Address outside Canada and 11 since I was physically located in NewYork.

As you were sent to USA by your Canadian company so this one month period is not added to residence period so you need to answer "No" to question 9 (c).
You need to mention this visit's details in 10 (a) & (b) and in 11.
** This one month period spent in USA is not considered to be residence period.

Thanks amanburki. Follow up question. Question 10 (a) only requests you to write residence addresses, and not the addresses you used during your vacations. Assuming this is true, would it be ok if i write my address in US during my 1 month training, even though its not a residence address?

**Training doesn't fall under work or school. I was not working or studying in US, because that would have required me to get work/study permits for US. Training was done using B1/B2 visa.

Hi Subtain,

In 10 (a) you need to enter all the residential addresses either inside or outside Canada, where you stayed during your residency period BUT No need to write the addresses of your vacation inside Canada. But if you traveled outside Canada for vacation/study/work/training etc. then definitely you need to mention that address. Yes that is fine to mention your address in US during your 1 month stay.

In section 11, you need to key in the same information again while giving the details activities during stays inside and outside Canada. Like while residing at a specific place what were you doing e.g, job, jobless, study, training etc. Suppose at a specific house you stayed for one year and out of that one year, you worked 4 months in company ABC and 8 months in company XYZ then you need to key in these two information for your same address in two separate line of section 11. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have some confusion or difficulty in filling section 11.
