Hi

I applied for my citizenship in April 2014. I received a RQ in early October. As I was gathering docs and reviewing the RQ form I became so worried about the section on Absence from Canada. In the original citizenship application, I only included the trips that were for more than a day (simply put I did not include any day trips to the USA) however on the RQ form it specifically say that I need to include the all absence including day trips and trips to the USA. On other threads I read that I don't need to include day trips in the online residence calculator. My residnce calculator was for 1101 days, excluding any day trips. Obviously the information I put on the original residence calculator and RQ are difference. Would this impact my application decision? I am going to write a free format letter to explain this difference.

I would really appreciate any advice / insights on it. Thank you!

FYI- I've been in Canada since 2001. I also have a very strong proof and evidence to support my employment and residence as I've been working for the same company (financial industry) since 2009.

I don't think you should be worried. Same day trips don't count as absence from Canada. So that should be alright. As long as you can demonstrate that you have met the residence requirement, you should be fine.

I hope you have more than 1095 days in total after minus-ing all absences.

Though nothing wrong but bit intriguing; why you were only able to accumulate the minimum pass in residency like 1101 days while you been here since 2001 and working since 2009.

However you do have to report all day trips in the RQ - "Q7 List all trips". Q7 is all about "Trips" but RQ Q9 (like Residency calculator) is about "live"d.

Technically it is same day trip, if you came back the same day i.e drive down the border early morning and crossed back five minutes to twelve/midnight. Then you have to list it in Q7 but not in Q9. If you stayed there for night you include that in Q9 too.
You have to declare every absence even if you have gone for just one day.... Better safe than sorry.

In RQ Q9 / Residency calculator: The only trips you do not have to declare are those where you left and came back to Canada on the same day.

Thanks for your reply. I called CIC this morning and I was advised that I do not have to worry about this, as the same day trips are not required to be listed in Residency Calculator- the rep wasn;t so sure at the beginning and later confirmed (after putting me on a hold)- she advised that I would still list all trips in Q7 RQ, and write a free format letter to provide clarification.

Why I hurried so much? I had that much high desire to become Canadian as I spent 1/2 of my life in the country!
