Hi Guys,

I am Oct 2014 applicant and today received an email from CVO about an interview. They have asked me and my spouse and any dependents above the age of 18 to be present on the given date. I am a little worried as to why me?? when majority of applicants are getting interview waivers. :(

They have mentioned to bring along the following documents,

Please bring your passport(s) and the following documents:
- Recent employment reference letter
- Recent Proof of funds
- Your Personal History (Schedule A form, Question 8) details from 18th birthday without gaps.

Do not send the documents to this office prior to your interview. Bring them with you. Bring originals, not photocopies. If you do not bring the required documents, you will not be interviewed.

My questions are as follows,

1.) Recent employment reference letter - Just before I had submitted my application (2 months before) I had resigned from the company that I used to work due to closure of company. I had obtained all relevant reference letters and submitted the same along with my resignation letter in my application. I have also mentioned the period after my resignation to the date of application as "Unemployed" in the Schedule A form question 8 (personal history). Till now I am unemployed, but actively performing freelance work in online workplace communities.

-My question is, how will this have an impact on my interview? (being unemployed).

-Does being unemployed after my last employment (around 6 months) raise any negative thoughts/concerns to the VO on the ability of establishing my self economically in Canada?

-What do I submit for "Recent employment reference letter"?. I have already submitted my last employment reference letter along with my application. I claim points on that letter.

- Can I mention that I am working as a freelancer until I find a suitable job?. I can provide a statement of earnings as a freelancer from one of the workplace communities.

2.) Recent proof of funds - I am assuming a letter from my bank certifying the minimum required amount of settlement funds available in my account as of today should suffice?. I have provided such a letter along with the application. Or do I need to take last 6 months statements?

3.) Your Personal History (Schedule A form, Question 8) details from 18th birthday without gaps. - I have already provided Schedule A form and have mentioned personal history of 10 years in my original application (as they had mentioned since the age of 18, or the past 10 years, whichever is most recent).

- For all the employment/studies carried out during this period from my 18th birthday do I need to submit proof? (E.g. at the age of 18 I was at college to begin with. Do I need to submit my school records, etc?. Then my first job which is not relevant to NOC. Do I need to submit all the contracts, etc?)

4.) The last para of the email mentions the following,

You are required to attend an interview pursuant to subsection 15.(1) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA). Failure to attend this scheduled interview may result in the refusal of your application.

- What does this mean?. Does it give any clues at why I am called for the interview?

5.) Based on the documents they've asked to bring for the interview, is anyone able to guess what is the most likely reason for the interview?

6.) Any tips or advice during the interview?

Anyone else from CVO received interview calls?

Till now I am unemployed, but actively performing freelance work in online workplace communities.

-My question is, how will this have an impact on my interview? (being unemployed). Please go along with the original copies of your last reference letter from the company and a copy of the acknowledgement of your resignation letter if you have it. Please also go with evidence of freelance work you have been performing since; emails, letters, invoices

-Does being unemployed after my last employment (around 6 months) raise any negative thoughts/concerns to the VO on the ability of establishing my self economically in Canada? No, this will not have a negative impact. We are just expected to have at least one year working experience obtained in the last ten years, that is what is required to satisfy the work experience requirement for application. To be currently unemployed is not an impediment

-What do I submit for "Recent employment reference letter"?. I have already submitted my last employment reference letter along with my application. I claim points on that letter. We were required to submit the copies if the reference letter, please go for your interview with the original copy of the last reference letter you obtained

- Can I mention that I am working as a freelancer until I find a suitable job?. I can provide a statement of earnings as a freelancer from one of the workplace communities. yes, this is fine please, with all evidences as earlier advised

2.) Recent proof of funds - I am assuming a letter from my bank certifying the minimum required amount of settlement funds available in my account as of today should suffice?. I have provided such a letter along with the application. Or do I need to take last 6 months statements? Recent statement of account is preferred, you may take the bank certification letter as well to support

3.) Your Personal History (Schedule A form, Question 8) details from 18th birthday without gaps. - I have already provided Schedule A form and have mentioned personal history of 10 years in my original application (as they had mentioned since the age of 18, or the past 10 years, whichever is most recent). Please fill the form again, listing all personal history from age 18

- For all the employment/studies carried out during this period from my 18th birthday do I need to submit proof? (E.g. at the age of 18 I was at college to begin with. Do I need to submit my school records, etc?. Then my first job which is not relevant to NOC. Do I need to submit all the contracts, etc?) Please take along your original educational qualifications and certifications especially copies of your evaluation report. Also take along documents proving all your employment which will be captured in your personal history even though you are not claiming points for it. It is still part of your personal history

You are being called for the interview to satisfy the review officer that the facts in your application are accurate and true. The alternative is that your application may be returned/refused. It is better to attend an interview and speak for your self than to have refused application. If you think about it positively, you will do well so don't be discouraged, remain positive as everything works for our good ;)

5.) Based on the documents they've asked to bring for the interview, is anyone able to guess what is the most likely reason for the interview? Review officer wants to be assured you really work in the NOC you stated in your application. They may have tried to contact your employer for background check but like you said, the company is now closed. This is your chance to clarify any grey area they have

6.) Any tips or advice during the interview? Stay calm, remain truthful, give short but concise answers. Don't talk too much, be relaxed, in control.

Anyone else from CVO received interview calls? Read back to see the experiences of other applicants who got interview calls, Check the older posts here

Thanks Pipis Husband, for your input and suggestions.

What actually do they mean by Recent employment reference letter ? Is it a letter from my present employer (whoever it maybe and whatever NOC) or is it a letter obtained recently once again from my previous employers for whom I have already submitted reference letters to claim work experience points?.

Also, the freelance work that I do does not necessarily related to my primary NOC. It is be a mix of NOC's depending on the type of work that I undertake at the time. (such as oDesk)

I have a current visiting card of the officer who signed my reference letter at my previous employment in the capacity of the HR/Admin Manager at that time. Should I attach this along with the original reference letter that I plan to take for the interview?

This request is for you to provide a new reference letter from your employer but you have already stated that you resigned from the job and the company has folded up which means you can't get a new reference letter from them

Also, the freelance work that I do does not necessarily related to my primary NOC. It is be a mix of NOC's depending on the type of work that I undertake at the time. (such as oDesk) You may choose to explain to the review officer at your interview that though you do not have a new job, you have been keeping busy doing freelance jobs in different roles. Provide job orders, invoices, emails and other correspondences to support this position

Would getting a letter from the ex HR and Admin officer in my previous company be considered as a recent employment reference letter?. If so, what would be the contents of such a letter?

Not sure about that, would you consider a letter from an ex-staff of a company that has closed as an acceptable document to use as your reference letter?

I think you should just explain to the review officer that the company has folded up but if you wish to get a new reference letter from the ex HR person, you are free to do so. Cheers.

Yes you maybe right. The reason i asked was because i read in some posts that in the event that your unable to get an employment verification letter from your previous employer, you have a colleague or your previous supervisor write up the reference letter on their present company stationary. I don't know, maybe i am wrong or just too worried with this whole interview thing....

Hey sir, remember the first rule; be relaxed. Once the review officer learns that the company is closed, life has to move on. You are not the person who closed the company so the interview will move on to other issues. No need to be worried all day, all the best.

Good day,

I'm a 2013 applicant and AVO has invited me for an interview on April 20th. I was told to come alone with:

1. Original bank statement for the past 6months.
2. Original employment offer letters from current and previous employers.
3. Original payslips for the past year.
4. Original current and previously held passports.

Does anyone have an idea the kind of questions they ask?

I changed jobs last year without informing AVO, would this present a problem as my new job is slightly different from what i submitted as my NOC but pays significantly higher?

Thank you.
