Hi there,
I posted a few weeks ago before I found out I was pregnant but now this seems to change everything. My boyfriend and I have been planning on getting married for a while, we were just waiting until we had enough money and his own place. We are both 18, and have just found out I'm 8 weeks pregnant due to my birth control failing. We are both in a really bad place as far as money goes but I have decided that I am going to keep the baby, and we're just going to have to kick our butts into gear and start saving up. What I need to know is how this works, since he is Canadian and I am American, we obviously can't live together right now and when starting a family that's extremely hard. I am going to apply for low income housing soon so I can get my own place without roommates, which I'm afraid Canada will reject me because I'll be on assisted living. Once he has the money and his own place we will be getting married, but where do we go after that? Should I have the baby in the US or Canada? Will my baby be Canadian or able to become Canadian if born in the US? If it is born in Canada, will it have to stay with the father or could it come back with me until we are able to move up there? I'll put these questions in bullet points so its easier to answer. Thank you so much for any help, we just want to be together and have our family together.

Questions:
-Will my being on assisted living make Canada reject my application for sponsorship?
-We know the first step is getting money and a house and then getting married, but what happens after that?
-Are there any special programs for expecting parents applications/sponsorship?
-Will the baby be Canadian or able to become Canadian if born in the US?
-If born in Canada, can it come back to the US with me until I can live there or will it have to stay with the father in Canada?
-Should the baby be born in Canada or the US?
-If I tell them at the border that the baby and I are staying with the father for 6 months to have the family together, will they let me? (Canada has turned me away at the border when trying to visit him for 6 months, but he was able to come visit me for 6 months in the US without a problem)

Thank you so much for any help, it is greatly appreciated

UPDATE: He lives in Alberta

Plan to have the baby in the US. You most likely won't have health care coverage in Canada (I don't believe you've told us which provide your boyfriend lives in). If you're short on money, you're not going to be able to pay to have the delivery in Canada.

Being on housing assistance in the US won't impact your ability to be sponsored. However your boyfriend needs to stay off assistance in Canada.

There are no specialy programs for expecting parents & sponsorship. Everyone is treated equally.

If your boyfriend is Canadian then the baby will be Canadian as well regarldess of where it is born.

There is no guarantee if or how long you will be allowed into Canada when you arrive at the border. If you've had problems before then it's more likely you will have problems again.

Information about the sponsorship process is here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/sponsor/spouse.asp

Hi srea21,

You both must be very stressed out, but remember, life is full of complications--yet, they don't last forever.

Do you have health insurance in the US? I don't know if you would find this useful, but I just read in another thread in this forum (see link below) that it is possible for spouses/partners to get health care in Alberta even with visitor's visas. If this is possible, it may mean that you and your boyfriend could be together during your pregnancy.

Best of luck!

In order to be covered under Alberta health care the OP would have to be married or in common law (as per provincial laws in Alberta you are recognized as common law after living together for a minimum of 3 years) with her boyfriend who is a resident ofnAlberta b
