I'm studying in Alberta on a study visa that is about to expire in September 2019. My husband is also here on a open work permit based on my student visa. I am four weeks pregnant and I am likely to deliver in October, a month after the Fall semester starts.

From previous experience with pregnancy, I dont think I can manage attending university in my final trimester. I don't know or cannot find whether my university will allow me time off. What will happen to my study permit if I took a year out? Should I renew ASAP and then request for some sort of maternity leave? I'm not sure what to do.

If you take a year off then your study permit will be automatically canceled and you'll end up in Canada without status. You also will not qualify for a Post Graduate Work Permit since your studies won't have been continuous.

If you want to take a year off from your studies, you should apply to change your status to visitor to ensure you remain in status in Canada.

Hi, thank you for replying.

Could I possibly get an authorized maternity leave from my school? Would that still affect my status?

Your status will still be affected.

I think you can still be considred as a student if your leave is approved from school and is not more than 150 days.

What counts as an authorized leave from your studies?
There are a few cases where you may be able to take a leave of up to a maximum of 150 days from your program of studies and still be considered to be actively pursuing your studies.

You don’t need to tell us if you’re taking an authorized leave, but you do need to provide proof that your leave is authorized and that it’s no longer than 150 days, if we ask for it.

Hi, I'm in the same situation right now. What did you end up doing? I am expected to give birth on February 2020.
