PRC Canada Renewal - Is an interview possible when I report to pick it up?

Hello the Forum,

Has anyone been interviewed when picking up a renewed PRC?

I became resident in October 2004, settled really permanently in November 2008 and the card expired in October 2009. I was 60 days short to meet the residency requirement by the time it had expired.

The last time I travelled was in August 2009 and I was interviewed at the border in July 2009 to confirm if I actually in-residence. The officer seemed to be satisfied with my answers. I ordered my electronic file from ATIP-AIPRP it does not say anything about my entry interview at the border.

I applied to renew the card in June 2013, i.e. almost 3,5 years after the first one had expired. I've received a letter stating that my application had been approved and I had to report to a local office to verify my identity (bring passport, Confirmation of Permanent residence, old card and another ID) and to receive the card.


My question is: Has anyone been questioned on residency details beyond the last 5 years limit when reporting to receive the renewed PRC (I am worried about those -60 days)? How shall I prepare for the interview? Or shall I just take this easy as a routine procedure.

Any comments/ advice would be highly appreciated.

How many days did you declare that you were here in Canada when you submitted your PRC renewal application?

How long did it take you to receive the notification that it has been approved from the date you submitted your application for renewal?

When did you submit your renewal? I think they should only look at the last 5 years immediately preceding the date your application is received by CIC. Do you know when was that?

Hello Benk,

I have been absent for 125 days out of the last 5 years, including 10 days for work for a canadian public agency, i.e. 1400 (+10) days in Canada by June 10, 2013. I have not left Canada since August 2009.

I applied on June 10, my online status changed to "approved" on August 27, and I received the letter yesterday.

I think you are fine...As long as you have at least 730 days in the last 5 years preceding the receipt of your application for renewal...

What documents/proofs did you submit when you apply for renewal?

I think you should bring originals of the documents/proofs that you submitted when you apply for renewal in addition to the documents to verify your identity as requested by CIC in the letter when you go and pick up your new PR card...

Leon, can you please confirm the statement above and/or provide your input as a second opinion...

This is a quality control/ program integrity thing - CIC will randomly pull in an applicant to make sure the PR Renewal is going smoothly. Show up at the Local Office with the required documentation - they will focus on passport stamps. You easily meet the 730 day rule so should be a breeze..relax you are helping CIC out.

I submitted CRAs notices of assessments, phone and hydro bills, leases, work contacts. All bills are print outs (I use online billing), translation of passport stamps .

If you have more than enough days and not many passport stamps, you shouldn't have a problem. I remember one poster saying that he went to pick up his PR card and the officer refused to give it to him because she said his passport looks like it has too many stamps and she would require additional proof. Maybe he just caught a bad officer on a bad day but stuff like that can happen. However, like I said, if you have more than enough days and you show up with all the documents, you shouldnt' have a problem.

I have never heard of anybody being asked that question. If they do, you can say you forgot. There is no law that says you have to renew your PR card before or shortly after it expires. There's no law that says that a PR must have a PR card at all actually except in order to return after having been outside Canada.

Request for personally picking the PR card is just a quality control exercise.
They will only ask routine questions like how long you have been gone etc.
I have experienced it and there was no problem.

Got the card yesterday! No questions asked, just showed the passport and IDs. Took 5 mins total including waiting time.
