Hi guys. I have dual citizenship from India and SA. I have processed my papers using the SA passport. So now I would like to know if I can travel on any of the 2 passports with my PR Card or I specifically need to use only the SA passport whenever I travel outside Canada

Others can comment and although I do not know but did not think India allowed dual citizenship.

You could travel anywhere on either passport as determined by entry requirements of the country you are visiting but on returning to Canada, boarding a plane and at the border you should use your PR card and your SA passport given that is what you used for your PR application. Your PR card is of course not relevant to leave the country or enter any other country but just to come back to Canada

Thanks for your response. So basically when the SA passport expires, I can not replace it with my Indian passport?

You can travel to Canada on either passport. It doesn't matter what nationality is listed in the PR card.

Thanks Canuck_in_uk......you have eased my heart. I was actually worried because my SA passport expires in 2019 and I do not intend to renew it. I would like to continue with the Indian passport after the expiry of the SA one. Do I need to inform CIC about the changes or it doesn't matter as long as my PR card is valid?

You don't need to inform IRCC.

hey Guys, Can someone please enlighten me in following ,damn Complex, situation (future situation).

I am Indian National, holding PR for Australia and applied to Canada PR as well (AOR Stage as of today).

My question is, I may get Aussie citizenship in Dec 2020 and I'm expecting my Canada PR in June 2019. Under both of these assumption, my both PR are against my Indian Passport. Now, when I get Australian citizenship in Dec 2020 before I move to Canada for good, I have following questions.
  • Can I update CIC regarding this movement (From Indian national to Australian National as a Citizen) ?
  • What happen to my Canada PR on my Indian Passport ?
  • Can IRCC update my PR detail under new passport (with new Country other than India) ?
I know it's quite complex situation but I'm sure many might have dealth with it.

Do let me know.

Thanks a lot in Advance.

Cheers,
Vir

1) no update is necessary;
2) what do you mean? I thought you can't have both Indian and Australian passport because India does not recognize dual nationalities.

Hi Steaky, Thanks for the update.
When you said no update is necessary, I am not quite sure what do you mean, since my Canada PR will be based on my Indian passport (till now I haven't received my Aussie citizenship, and expected to be in 2021 and I may get Canada PR in 2019 and at that time I'll have Indian passport). Now once I receive my Aussie passport, can I still retain my Canada PR (which was received based on my Indian passport ?)

I know situation is quite trickey

No tricky at all.

You are still a India national until you obtain Canadian and/or Australian citizenship.

You won't have "Canada PR on your Indian passport". You will have status as a PR, end of. Your nationality is irrelevant.

India does not allow dual citizenship.

The moment you take citizenship of a country other than India, your passport and Indian citizenship is null and void. Hence, you cannot use the passport for any visa or travel. If you do use the passport for visa and/or ultimately travel it constitutes an offence under the Indian Passport Act, 1967, and attracts penalties
At this point, you should be using the passport of the country for which you took citizenship.

Now comes the part for PR visa on Indian passport. As others have stated, PR is a status in Canada and visa is to facilitate you to reach Canada to get that status.
If your new passport does not require visa for Canada, you can use the new passport to travel to Canada. I would personally prefer that you inform the visa office incharge of your application since I believe they list citizenship on the COPR.
If you have landed as permanent resident, the visa is just historical record and COPR will not be changed as well (again historical record).

You mean, change of citizenship after PR doesn't affect your PR ?
