Hi everyone,

Need your advice. I've been reading through some threads regarding this topic, but I might need more information.

I am Filipino and my PR has just been approved. Me and my girlfriend of 3 years are planning to get married (asap).
As i have read (and we will do), we will get married after my landing in Canada. The goal is we are apart the least time, getting her in through the inland sponsorship route.

Our dilemma is where we should get married and how I can bring her with me to Canada after that.

We are planning the steps below:

1. My girlfriend will apply for a TRV (with her family). She has relatives there as well, so reason is to visit family and for leisure.

2. I leave for Canada (Toronto) to be a landed immigrant. PR card will be sent to mailing address in 48 days (published processing time in cic).

3. While waiting for the PR card, I will go back to Philippines since I will need to get married. I will just have the PR card mailed to me by my family member who will receive from Canada mailing address. Worst case is to apply for a single-use permanent resident travel doc in Canada visa office in the Philippines to return to Canada.

>>>Question on the single use travel document -- there is a portion in the form for your activities and employment since you became a PR and a Residency Obligation. Given that I will return to Philippines weeks after I land in Canada, I have no information to put in these fields in the Application for Travel Document (Permanent Resident Abroad). Will this be okay?

4. Once married in the Philippines, I will leave after for Canada, make sure to get a job so I can sponsor my wife (inland) when she arrives.

>>>Question on sponsoring spouse --- In order to sponsor my wife, is it okay to already apply even if I just got employed and will just show my financial sources.

5. After getting a job, she travels to Canada with TRV and I will apply for inland sponsorship, OWP and extension of visa.

>>>Question on her travel with TRV -- will she need a return ticket to ensure she gets in? Or no need for return ticket and if Immigration Officer asks her, will she declare that she will stay for inland sponsorship?

Please let me know the if there are any issues on our initial plan, setbacks, problems, a better way to do it, etc.

Thank you in advance for your advice. I will truly appreciate your feedback on our dilemma.

Hi,

I was questioned at port of entry (Vancouver Airport) at the secondary inspection and the CBSA officer asked if I looked into being a Permanent Resident in Canada. I said yes, I did. And then he asked a bunch of questions between me and my husband (he was my boyfriend then) to make sure it was a genuine relationship.

I did not have a return ticket, I only bought a one way ticket and my plan was to establish my life here with my husband. I told him I was going to get married and he took my phone into the office, I am very sure he inspected messages and photos on my phone that I have been sending to and fro with my spouse.

After all that, he let me in, on a 6 months' visitor visa. I am from a Visa Exempt country, by the way. His body language was kind of cocky and intimidating in the beginning and at the end he was very soft, helpful and friendly.

What I am trying to say is:

1. Having a return ticket and travel plan is highly encouraged as to show the CBSA officer that you are a genuine visitor. This is important to illustrate that you are not here to work illegally or to be an illegal immigrant.

2. Have enough money for the stay. You can say you will provide for her THROUGHOUT her entire stay in Canada, be it a visitor or PR through Spousal Sponsorship. Of course, you need to have a job and pays enough for two people.

3. Be truthful in any situation when dealing with immigration. Don't even bother to lie. They can see through it immediately, they are trained to spot any discrepancies.

4. Whatever decision you get at the port of entry is almost entirely dependent on which CBSA officer you get at that point. They have to be convinced you are a genuine visitor and you are going to abide the laws and regulations of Canada.

Good luck.

Thank you so so much for the feedback queenpies. :)

Just a follow up question, would you know how much annual income is needed to support two people?

Thank you again. :)

Good morning,

It ultimately depends on which province/city you are residing in.

There is no more a minimum income requirement for Spousal Sponsorship if you are ONLY going to support your wife. Obviously a full time job is good to prove that you will be able to support her throughout her stay in Canada. Just be practical.

You have to read up on the requirements.

You also must not be a recipient of welfare benefits in Canada nor in any kind of bankruptcy proceedings.

Have you and your girlfriend lived together for more than a year? If yes, you will have to add her to your application as soon as possible.
