PR Validity Calculation

Hello Friends,

My friend is on a work-permit and just got his PR. He has been here for 2 years on Work-permit and now that he is a PR, will he be eligible to renew the PR if he stays 2 more years or will his time on work-permit add-up to 2 years time or at least add-up to a part of it ?

Please advice.

Only time spent in Canada after he became a PR counts towards the 2 year PR residency requirement. So no - none of the time he spent in Canada on his work permit will count towards the residency requirement.

You're confusing the PR residency requirement with the citizenship residency requirement. Both have different rules. For citizenship (3 out of 4 years residency), you can currently county some of your time from before you became a PR towards the residency total - for PR (2 out of 5 years residency) you can't. However note that a bill has been proposed to change the citizenship residency rules and it's quite possible that soon you won't be able to count pre-PR time for citizenship either.
